people understand the world, Symbols provide clues to understanding experiences. They convey
recognizable meanings that are shared by societies. Symbolism — is when something represents
abstract ideas or concepts, it assigns names, denominates, and defines relations between various
elements (actors, actions, goals, means, objects, values, etc.) articulated within a narrative.
FUNCTIONS OF SYMBOLS AND SYMBOLISM
Social symbols are used to transfer culture, ideologies or beliefs from group to another group of
people. Symbols are also used to preserve traditions or beliefs of a certain group of people. All
symbols contain the “face” and “hidden” values, the hidden value, in a functional perspective,
holds greater meaning and importance than the face value. Symbols and symbolism have been
utilized to create movements, spread ideas, and share advocates.
Types of symbol:
Cultural Symbols - manifestation that signifies the ideology of a particular culture that has
meaning within that culture.
Social Symbols - relating to human societies and its modes of organization (i.e., social classes,
social problems, social issues, etc.)
Political Symbols - used to represent a political standpoint: seen in various media and forms
such banners, flag, motto, etc.Economics Symbols = used in production, distribution, and consumption of goods and service
like currency, market, labor, demands and other economic activities.
Cultural practices are the manifestation of a culture or sub-culture, especially concerning the
traditional and customary practices of a particular ethnic or other cultural group. Cultural practice
is also a subject of discussion in questions of cultural survival. Such as Calbayog City Fiesta
celebrate by Calbayognon and the wearing of barong Tagalog by Filipinos.
Eg. religious and spiritual, medical treatment, forms of artistic expressions, culinary, housing
and child-rearing practices.

National items and symbols are used to create Filipino identity and to promote solidarity and
unity in the nation. Lupang Hinirang was meant to convey the message that at UP, we should
serve the university, and the nation, with love (pagsinta), moving toward goodness and “glory
and splendor” (kaluwalhatian). Philippine Flag which white triangle signifies Filipino hope for
equality, the upper blue stripe stands for peace, truth, and justice, while the lower red stripe
stands for patriotism and valor. Philippine Jeepney has also become a reflection of the Filipino
spirit — resilient, innovative, and optimistic. Philippine Eagle represents the strength, uniqueness,
a love for freedom, and power of the Filipino people.
Among the cultural practices in the Philippines are traditional medical practices belief in
“albularyo”, herbal medicines, alternative medicines, and other home remedies,
religious/spiritual practices Obando Festival in Bulacan for fertility, Panaad sa Camiguim as act
of penance and pilgrim, Feast of the black Nazarene in Manila, etc., culinary practices rice 3
meals a day, Adobo, Sinigang, Street foods, Balut, rice cakes, etc., child-rearing practices are
respectful manners (mano,po and opo), obedience to parents and elders, no talking back to
elders, removing footwear before entering the house, family mealtime, ninong/ninang, ate/kuya,
punishment using belt/tsinelas.
SOCIAL SYMBOLS AND PRACTICES
Social practice is a theory within psychology that seeks to determine the link between practice
and context within social situations. Emphasized as a commitment to change, social practice
occurs in two forms: activity and inquiry.
Social practices refer to everyday practices and the way these are typically and habitually
performed in a society. Such practices are going to work, cooking, showering are meaningful to
people as parts of their everyday life activities.

Political practices are common things that are done within a state or country. It is related to the
practices done in administration, distribution and attainment of power, bureaucratic composition.
Is the set of activities that are associated with making decisions in groups, or other forms of
power relations between individuals, such as the distribution of resources or status. Artifacts or
objectifications of different political meanings, especially related to power.
Political participation includes abroad range of activities through which people develop and
express their opinion on the world and how it is governed, and try to take part in and shape the
decisions that affect their lives. These activities range from developing thinking about disability
or other social issues at the individual or family level, joining disabled people's organization, and
campaigning at the local, regional or national level, to the process of formal politics, such as
