worksheet 7: Genetics

Exercise 1: Coat color in rats

We cross two pure lines of rats, one with grey coat and the other with white coat. All of the
F1 rats have grey coats.
1. Indicate the dominant allele. Justify your answer.
2. Designate by symbols the corresponding alleles.
3. Specify the genotypes of the parents and that of the F1 rats.
4. We cross now a male of F1 with a female of F1. Determine by making the necessary
factorial analysis to determine the genotypic and phenotypic proportions of F2.

Exercise 2: Cystic fibrosis

Cystic fibrosis is a severe genetic disease characterized by digestive and respiratory troubles.
This gene exists in multiple alleles. An individual will be affected by this disease if and only
if it carries two copies of the allele m responsible for the disease. An individual is normal if it
carries at least one normal allele N of this gene.
1. Is the allele responsible for cystic fibrosis dominant or recessive? Justify the answer.
2. A normal homozygous woman married a normal heterozygous man.
a. Write the genotype of this woman and that of her husband.
b. Determine by making the necessary factorial analysis to determine
whether this
couple is in risk of having a sick child.

Exercise 3: Inheritance of Fur Color in Minks

In minks, fur color is determined by a gene located on an autosome.
We cross a mink having white fur of pure race with another mink having black fur of pure
race. All minks obtained in the first generation F1 have black and white striped fur.
1. Is this the case of dominance or codominance? Justify the answer.
2. Designate by symbols the corresponding alleles.
3. Write the genotypes of parents and that of F1.

The cross of F1 minks among themselves gives in F2 generation:

 20 minks of white and black

striped fur
 10 minks of white fur
 10 minks of black fur.
4. Determine by making the necessary factorial analysis to verify the results obtained.
5. Draw a histogram (bar chart) representing the results F2 generation.

Exercise 4: Inheritance of Feather Color in Poultry

A cross between pure white poultry and pure black poultry gives in the first generation all blue
poultry.

1. Is this a case of dominance or incomplete dominance? Justify the answer.

2. Represent, using symbols, the corresponding alleles.
3. Indicate the genotype of the parent poultries and that of F 1.

When F1 hybrids are crossed among each other, they give in the F 2 121 white poultry, 119 black
poultry, and 238 blue poultry.
4. Calculate the percentage of each phenotype obtained in F 2.
5. Determine by making the necessary factorial analysis to verify the results obtained in F 2.

Exercise 5: Polydactyly

Polydactyly is a hereditary disease characterized by the presence of an additional finger in the

hand or in the foot. In order to study the transmission of this disease in humans, the pedigree
of document 1 was carried out.

1. Justify from the pedigree that polydactyly is a dominant disease.

2. Designate the two alleles (normal and affected) of the polydactyly gene.
3. Indicate the genotypes of parents I-1 and I-2. Justify the answer for each.
4. Specify the genotype of the individual II-3
5. Perform the necessary factorial analysis to verify the phenotypes of the offspring of
the couple (II-5, II-6).
