Remove the tall cone and access plates or panels as necessary to gain access to the alt fuselage area 2 Flemove the elevator push rods which connect the elevator aft bell crank to the elevator horn NOTE “Two push rods on all noted airplanes except 99 and 100 which have three rods 3, Remove the rod ends from the push rod assemblies and thoroughly clean the exterior Service Instructions No. 0394-152, Rev. If ‘and the interior of the rods with solvent or equivalent All lubricant should be thoroughly cleaned from the threads of the rod and the rod ends NoTE Before removing the rod ends from the tubes, the rod ends and the tube ‘ends should be identified and the total length of the rod assembly should >be measured trom center to center of each rod end bolt hole to faciitate reassembly. (T IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT THIS MEASUREMENT BE MADE ACCURATELY AND MAINTAINED ON REASSEMBLY OF THE ROD ENDS TO THE TUBE ) Care should be exercised during reinstallation to ensure that each rod assembly is reinstalled on the airplane in the same location trom which it was removed. (See step 8 ) 4 Inspect the rods using die penetrant procedures as outlined in FAA Aircraft Inspection ‘and Repair Manual AC 43 13-18, for possible cracks, nicks or corrosion '5 If eracks or corrosion are found, replace the rod assembly with the appropriate new rod ‘assembly as specified in the applicable Parts Catalog NOTE Minor nicks or scratches (less than 010-inch deep) may be smoothed and primed with zinc chromate primer 6 Inspect for bows in the rod assembly by laying a straight edge (straight edge must be at least as long as the tube) against the tube (a flat surface plate may be used in lieu of a straight edge), moving it around the circumference of the tube and checking with a feeler gage between the tube and the straight edge Bows in the tube up to 060 inch are ‘acceptable. If 060 inch is exceeded, the rod assembly should be replaced with the ‘appropriate new rod assembly specified in the applicable Parts Catalog 7° Ifthe above inspection indicates the rods are acceptable, proceed as follows ‘a Blow air through the rod and heat the rod to 212°F to 225°F to remove all moisture Fill the push rod with MIL-C-16173 corrosion preventative compound (such as, Cosmolene 1058, E F Houghton & Co , Philadelphia, Pa , 19133) iluted with naphtha sufficiently to allow flowabiliy, and drain off the excess solution ‘© Lubricate tho threads on both rod ends with MIL-C-16173 and reassemble the rod assembly CAUTION Be certain that the threads on the rod ends are visible in the inspection holes in the ends of the push-pull tubes Paint a black band approximately ¥2 inch wide around the tube (as near the center ‘of the tube as possible) to identity the rod assembly as having been anti-corrosion treated & Reinstall the rod assemblies in the airplane and adjust to proper rigging position 9 Reinstall the tat cone and access panels which were removed for this modification PART II NoTE ‘Any elevator push rod assemblies in Aero or Aviation Centers’ stock that are known to have been anti-corrosion treated and checked for alignment per Revision It of these Service Instructions should be identified as irected in step 2 below 506 Service Instructions No. 0334-152, Fev. lil RECORD COMPLIANCE: eot6 1. Rlemove the tal cone andlor access plates as necessary to gain access to the elevator push rod assemblies in the aft fuselage 2. Paint a black band approximately 2 inch wide around the tube of each rod assembly {as near the center of the tube as possible) to identity the rod assemblies as having been anti-corrosion treated 3. Reinstall the tall cone andior access plates which were removed in step 1 PART Ill 1) Remove the tall cone and access panels as necessary to gain access to the alt fuselage area 2 Remove the elevator push rod assemblies from the airplane NoTE Two push rods are on all noted airplanes except the 99 and 100 which have three rods 3. Remove the rod ends from the push rods and inspect the interior of the tubes for indications of having been anti-corrosion treated Treated tubes will have a dark, dll tacky ‘appearing finish on the interior The interior of untreated tubes will appear smooth and possioly shiny. Nove Before removing the rod ends from the tubes, the rod ends and the tube lends should be identified and the total length of the rod assembly should be measured from center to center of each rod end bolt hole to faciitate reassembly (IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT THIS MEASUREMENT BE MADE ACCURATELY AND MAINTAINED ON REASSEMBLY OF THE ROD ENDS TO THE TUBE ) Care should be exercised during reinstallation to ensure that each rod assembly is reinstalled on the airplane in the same location from which it was removed. (See step 6.) 4. Ifanti-corrosion treatment is in evidence, check the rod assembly for alignment and. paint a black identification band around the tube as described in Part |, steps 6 and 7d of these Service Instructions 5 If anti-corrosion treatment is not evident, accomplish steps 3 through 7d of Part | of these Service Instructions. 6 Reassemble and reinstall the rad assomblies in the airplane and adjust to proper ‘igging position CAUTION Be certain that the threads on the rod ends are visible in the inspection holes in the ends of the tubes 7 Reinstall the tall cone and access panels which wore removed for this modification ‘Upon completion of these Service Instructions, make an appropriate maintenance record entry
