EATING DISORDERS
Eating disorders are one of the silent secrets a lot of families suffer from. Millions of people
live with these disorders every year, and the majority are adolescents, in particular, young women.
Why are adolescents and young women vulnerable to developing an eating disorder? The Institute
of Mental Health says it is because at this period of time, women are most probable to diet and
maintain a slim figure. Certain sports (for example, gymnastics) and jobs (for example, modeling)
especially show that we need to have a thin body.
“Anorexia nervosa” consists in not eating because you think you are fat. If you are 15%
under your normal body weight and you are losing weight because you are not eating, you are
probably suffering from this.
“Bulimia nervosa” is characterized by excessive eating and then eliminating the food by
vomiting, the abuse of diuretics or exercising obsessively. It is difficult to know if a person is bulimic
because the body doesn’t change and the weight is normal. When people suffer from bulimia,
their families are very often ignorant of the situation.
Eating disorders are serious conditions to treat like any medical disease before it is too late.
If people don’t treat it, it can result in severe medical complications, very dangerous for life. The
treatment of eating disorders normally includes psycho-therapy and medication. These disorders
are easily treatable and often cured in months.
