University of the Philippines Manila
TIMELINE
1907
The Philippine Commission passed
Act No. 1688 which appropriated
the sum of P780,000.00 for the 1910
construction of the PGH. The Philippine General Hospital opened its
door to the public on September 1 and was
eventually linked to the College of Medicine,
1914 then the Philippine Medical School.
Dr. William Musgrave, then Dean
of the College of Medicine was
designated as division chief of PGH
since PGH became a division of
Bureau of Health. 1916-1936
PGH was placed under the first Filipino administration of Dr.
Felipe Calderon, dean of the University of the Philippines-
College of Medicine (UPCM). The decade was characterized
1947 by infrastructure construction.
By virtue of Executive Order No. 94,
Philippine President Roxas transferred
PGH to the University of the Philippines. 1954
President Ramon D. Magsaysay separated
PGH from the UPCM administratively.
Thus, the new PGH Director was appointed
1967 separate from the UPCM dean.

• Robotic surgery was introduced in the hospital with the creation
of the PGH Robotic Steering Committee. Robotically-assisted
procedures for general surgery (colorectal, hepatobiliary, and
gastrointestinal), urologic, and gynecologic cases have been
undertaken; procedures for head and neck surgery, pediatric, and
thoracic cases will follow. Robotic surgery enhances a surgeon’s
capabilities in laparoscopic surgery thereby providing patients with
procedures that have minimal risks and complications and ensure
faster recovery.

quality service, training and research.
PGH is the country’s National University Hospital – a tertiary referral center and the teaching hospital of the University of the
Philippines Manila. It is the largest government hospital administered by the UP System; and offers various clinical training programs.
The rotations provide students the opportunity to acquire basic clinical experience in the different fields, and to be actively
involved in the care and management of admitted patients as well as those in the outpatient clinics under the direct supervision of
residents, fellows and consultants. It is during this time that the students begin to acquire the skills and proper attitudes necessary
for patient care.
Internship Program
The program is open to UP College of Medicine students who are in their last year at medical school, LU VII and post graduate interns
from other medical schools. These medical interns undergo rigorous clinical rotations in various departments and their respective
specialty sections for one year. Didactics, ward rounds and preceptorships, emergency room duties, outpatient clinic duties,
operating theatre rotations, departmental and interdepartmental conferences are included in the clinical rotations. Students may
be admitted to any of the three (3) tracks of the Internship Program (i.e. regular internship, core + electives internship, and straight
internship).
Residency Program
The program provides specialized training in the various specialties. They are open to all physicians who passed the medical
board examinations given by the Professional Regulation Commission. Admission to the 3-6 year residency programs is highly
competitive because of the limited slots and the superior quality of the training offered. While the residency programs are geared
primarily towards specialty training, they also provide opportunities for the participants to learn and do research and to acquire
teaching and even administrative skills.
