Rising Prices: A curse for the common man

By Nalini

Be it petrol or diesel, LPG cylinders, vegetables or common utility items, the prices of almost
all essential goods have been rising but income seems to be constant. Everybody, from the
poor to the middle class, experience the pinch. This causes great hardship and difficulties for
the people in the fixed income group or those belonging to the low-income group. Today
there is no limit to the price rise. Does it make sense to increase the prices every now and
then? Is it necessary for economic growth? The opposition parties have an issue but the
common man feels cheated. The poor are the worst affected

The government of the day goes on imposing taxes after taxes on the already
burdened citizens. This leads to a lot of money going into the national expenditure
and into the pockets of corrupt leaders and officials. Inflation has increased and with it
the burden of the common man. It means rise in rents, food prices, interest on loans and
decline of the value of rupee. The result – demand outstrips supply, increase in the cost of
production, corruption, black - marketing, artificial shortage. Onions and other vegetables
would become costlier than petrol, bringing tears to our eyes.

The situation can be disastrous. The poor would become poorer and the middle class will feel
the burden. There will be widespread dissatisfaction. The Central and State governments
would then be in trouble if they do not exercise strict control over the Public Distribution
System and address shortages during floods, droughts or lockdowns.

What then are the solutions? The government should take urgent steps to check hoarding of
essential commodities, control prices and prevent black-marketing. Corruption must be
ended at all levels. The people should be wise enough to cut down their expenses. Family
budgets should focus on necessary expenses.Liberal imports should be allowed.

Rising prices is a problem that has to be tackled at all levels. Let us understand the
value of money not waste it because the next budget may take more and give less. Students
must learn to live within their means, not make excessive demands. They must contribute to
household chores. They can motivate their parents and organise self-help groups to reach out
to the less privileged. They can open distribution centres at times of need and provide
essentials to the needy.
Together, we can make it less burdensome with our attitude and wise decisions.
