Knysna National Lake Area: Your Natural Heritage 
 

 Background
 The South African government 
created Knysna National Lake Area
in December 1985 to protect the
Knysna lagoon and salt swamp
 and  activities on the Knysna
lagoon.
 The Knysna estuary is the second
largest estuary in South Africa.
The Knysna river has its origin in the Outeniqua mountains. The  estuary where the
Knysna River meets the Indian Ocean is permanently open.
 
Special features/Things to see

The Tree Top Forest Chalet is situated in Harkerville Forest between Knysna and
Pletternberg Bay. The chalet is hidden at the head of wide valley.
The Knysna Forest Camping Decks: these timber decks give the visitor an
opportunity to feel at one with nature. Situated in the Diepwalle Forest area,
sleep over and enjoy some of the best day walks, mountain biking, and scenic
viewpoints.
Garden of Eden in Harkerville Forest offers the visitor the tree species of the
humid forest types. Enjoy the short circular walk and an 800 metre trail. There
is a marked route for wheelchairs and people with other disabilities.

 A innovative exhibition celebrating the life
and  times  of  Nelson  Rolihlahla  Mandela  is
currently on at the Apartheid Museum.
 
 “The exhibition attempts to give fresh life
into a story that has been well told in
thousand books, documentaries, and other
exhibitions  around the world,” says
Christopher Till, Director of the Apartheid
Museum.
 
 The strength of the exhibition is the way it attempts to provide a brief look of
Mandela in all his various reincarnations. It examines his  undoubted strengths
and greatness, but it does not hide his weaknesses, too.
 
Mandela’s extraordinary life is explored through six themes –character, comrade,
leader, prisoner, negotiator and statesman. In each theme, the narrative is
presented through dramatically visual wall displays, supported by films,
hundreds of photographs and displays of original artefacts.

The exhibition evidences how Mandela built a new nation from the fragments of
conflict, making full sense of the “weapons” at his disposal: love, persuasion,
forgiveness, and political wisdom –with a fair amount of modest humour
