Module 2: Lesson 2- Seatwork#4

1. How do you promote nation building in the Philippines?

- By giving our best and working honestly every day whatever our job is, in that simple way,
we are increasing the nation's productivity.
- By voting responsibly.
- If we want to change our society for the better, we can start by changing ourselves. Epictetus,
he’s a Greek philosopher, he said “Make it your business to draw out the best in others by being
an exemplar yourself.”.

2. In what way the DOST promote nation building?

- Since DOST is responsible for the coordination of science and technology-related projects in
the Philippines, they prepare policies and projects in the fields of science and technology. In that
way, they are supporting the national development.

3. Who among the former Presidents of the Philippines do you like most in terms of their
contributions in science and technology in nation building? Why?
- For me, it would be Fidel V. Ramos because his accomplishments became significant in the
field of S&T. He enacted the laws linked to S&T which are:
1. RA 7459: Inventors and Inventions Incentives Act
2. RA 8439: Magna Carta for Scientist Engineers, Researchers and other Science and
Technology Personnel in the Philippine government sectors
3. RA 8293: The Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines

Furthermore, during his leadership, he established the "Doctors to the Barrios” (DTTB) program
to make health care more accessible to Filipinos, he also established the National Program for
Gifted Filipino Children in Science and Technology for high school learners who wanted to
pursue a career in the field of science and engineering in college.

The economy recovered remarkably during the years 1993–1997. Also, Ramos implemented a
comprehensive Social Reform Agenda (SRA) that addressed the long-standing problem of
poverty.

Fidel V. Ramos put an end to the power crisis that hindered Filipino homes and industries for
two years.
4. Why people consider the use of technological advancement harmful on the environment?
- Not all people agree that technological advancement is harmful to our environment, especially
those who benefit abundantly. Although some people knew that some technological
advancements are dangerous and harmful, in the end, they just turn their heads away from the
situation.
An example of technological advancement that's harmful to our environment is the mining of
minerals used for making electronic devices or gadgets that every people have these days. On
average, around 35 different materials are used in smartphones. Can you imagine the large
amount that they need to mine to produce a single smartphone? Evidence strongly suggests
how the environment is affected and harmed by our desire for technology and the demand for
rare earth minerals.
