Objective
Students will be able to develop a critical understanding of the documentary genre and they
will be exposed to various non-linear digital video making media resources.

Topics Covered Under the Theme:

Child Labour
Child labour is a complex and systemic problem. It is impossible to point to one single cause.
Poverty, natural disasters, conflict, lack of quality education, remoteness and tradition are
some of the most common push factors, driving children into child labour.
Child Abuse

emotional or intellectual development.
Emotional abuse can be caused by:

• rejection
• name calling, teasing or bullying
• yelling
• criticism
• isolation
Right to Education
All children have the right to receive basic education and hence should be given opportunities
by the government of every country to thrive.
This includes:

• children with mental or physical disabilities

• children who live in distant and remote areas

• orphans and abandoned children

STEPS ON HOW TO MAKE A DOCUMENTARY

1. Conceptualize Your Topic and Find the Story

Think of a subject or topic that you really care about. Chances are, you already have a concept
that also encouraged you to make documentaries. It can be anything under the sun, as long as
there is an audience for it. Here are other things you may need to think about in order to
determine the content, tone, length, and even the filming style of your documentary:

• Your documentary’s purpose

• Your target audience

• Where the documentary will be shown (web, broadcast, or cinema)

• Filming location

• How big/popular you want the film to be

Do Some Research

Now that you have chosen the subject of your documentary, learn everything that you can
about it. Unlike regular cinematic films, documentaries need to be based in truth.

There are probably hundreds of other documentaries that explore the same subject, so you’ll
need to find a different angle, gather new facts, and search for interesting characters and
possible storylines. Don’t forget to:

• Take notes during your research

• Ensure accuracy

• Conduct initial interviews

• Check out similar documentaries

• Go for an interesting, emotional, and/or inspiring angle

• Include key points that will resonate with your audience

Make a Plan

Create an outline. Think about HOW you’re going to tell your story. What’s the structure? The
style? Is there existing footage or photos that help tell your story or will everything need to be
shot brand new? Who is your primary character(s)? What are you core story points? What are
the elements of your story that are compelling and/or make you “tingle” with intrigue? How can
you create that intrigue for your audience? Is there some existing situation you can film or do
you need to create the moment?

2. Create a Shot List

This is a list of the footage and interviews you’ll need to make your movie. Think of it as your list
of “ingredients”. Depending on the complexity of your project, you may or may not need to
create a budget.

A word about interviews. You may be tempted to put a lot of people on your interview wish list.
Again, there are no rules because each documentary has its own set of circumstances (maybe
there’s a reason to interview 100 people), but in general, it’s hard for an audience to get to
know more than 7-8 “characters” within one movie. So even if you interview 100 people, don’t
be surprised if you are only able to fit a fraction of them into your movie.

3. Write a Script

Once all of the footage is shot and you’ve gathered the various production elements, time to
start organizing it into a script. Pinpoint the most compelling elements of your story and start
crafting "mini-scenes" around those events. Remember, a script isn't necessarily what's spoken
or a voice-over. A script describes what the audience is seeing AND hearing.

4. Edit Your Video

Once you’ve gathered all of the necessary audio, video, and other digital material that you need
for creating your documentary, it’s time to start editing your video.

Using your computer and video editing software, you can start importing your clips in a
sequence. The first obvious step is to arrange your captured videos chronologically according to

7|Page
your proposed documentary timeline. If you’re doing the editing yourself, consider doing it like
the pros do: mix it up with fast and slow parts to create a more exciting and dynamic viewing
experience.

Once all of your footage has been laid out, clip and trim your videos as needed. Eliminate any
unnecessary footage that can bore your audience and does nothing to contribute to your
original idea. Polish the final video by ensuring that your scene sequences are in the right order
and adding effects to keep transitions smooth.

Add Appropriate Video Effects

A good video editor will also have a variety of effects, so make sure to use them. You may split,
trim, rotate videos, jump-cut, or face-off. However, you might want to refrain from using too
many transition effects. The viewers may just end up being close to frustrated with them, so
don’t overdo it.

5. Don’t Make Them Too Long

Sure, when you are a hotshot movie director, there’s no problem with making movies that are
similar to Lord of the Rings in length. However, when you are just beginning, you might want to
stick to short films.

Discard the trivial things and add the best scenes in there. Since many videos end up long and
boring, you should make sure yours stays short and attractive.
