    Rizal left the Philippines in May 1882 at the age of 20 to study in Europe. He traveled aboard the Salvadora, passing through the Suez Canal and arriving in Egypt before continuing on to Barcelona. In Barcelona, he found the city dirty and people unfriendly. He then traveled to Madrid where he enrolled in medical and philosophy studies at the University of Madrid. While studying, he befriended other students but was disappointed by how many spent their time gambling rather than studying. He wrote letters home and a poem for his mother during this time.
