The objectives of the proposed study as mentioned in the PO (Annexure-II) are:

(i) To assess Maximum possible potential for rainwater harvesting at all identified
NTPC’s projects/station/establishments/ offices
(ii) To assess the Potential of existing RWH structures/facilities/systems.
(iii) To recommend additional / new Rainwater harvesting structures/facilities/systems
to realize the full potential of rainwater harvesting at all the above locations, along
with techno–economic justification(s) for such proposals, and
(iv) To furnish requisite Detailed Specifications, Engineering drawings, and Cost
estimates to enable NTPC to go ahead with the implementation

3.0 SCOPE OF THE STUDY & TERMS OF REFERENCE

The scope of work of the proposed study including terms and conditions as mentioned in
the PO (Annexure-II) are:

(i) Hydro geological studies to know about geology and types of aquifers, surface
drainage pattern and hydro geological inventory for existing groundwater
structures in the area of project/station
(ii) Geoelectric Survey for spot soundings in the Project area to know about the
behavior of surface disposition of aquifers and water level. The interpretation of
geoelectric data depicts lithology, saturation & expected quality of ground water.
(iii) Short Duration Pumping Test: In this test, pump in existing open well/tube well is
run at constant discharge and drawdown of water table is recorded at periodic
intervals as per log scale. These data help to know approximate transmissivity and
specific yield of the aquifer, which are used to estimate the capacity of the aquifer
for to intake the rainwater
(iv) Any other suitable and appropriate method / study / procedure / advanced
technique to achieve the objectives of the study
(v) Water Resources evaluation in the area to assess extent of subsurface water
availability.
(vi) Study of Rainfall for past 25 years, Geological succession of the district,
Physiography, Drainage &Vegetation, Climate conditions in the station/project area.
(vii) Rainwater harvesting strategies may be decided based on ground water level, stage
of ground water development in the area, annual rainfall pattern, categorization of
area under safe, critical, or over exploited by CGWB, besides recharge possibility to
ground water from surface waterbodies.
(viii) The plan for artificial recharge to be prepared considering the hydrogeological
parameters and hydrological database.
(ix) Estimation of Recharge Potential in the Project/station area to be carried out
considering ideal location with good ground slope, adequate subsurface
permeability of the aquifer to accommodate maximum recharge of rainwater, Rate

1
of filtration, clogging of filtration media and Ground water pollution does not take
place.
(x) Recharge potential assessment: On completion of rainwater harvesting, recharge
potential of the station/ project area would be estimated as per approved
methodology of CGWA for Rooftop rainwater harvesting, Road runoff water
harvesting and Open area storm water harvesting.
(xi) All Primary and Secondary Data collection and analysis required for study
a). Collection of data on geology, hydrogeology, land use of the area.
b). Pre-monsoon & post monsoon water levels in existing wells/ground water.
c). Rain fall, runoff, and drainage patterns.
d). Existing & proposed ground water abstraction structures in project area &
vicinity
e). Any other data required for study.
(xii) Review and modify the existing RWH structures given in the plant layout, drainage
within and the maximum rainfall that can be harvested techno-economically.
(xiii) Estimate of recharge under existing conditions and in future with and without RWH
facilities.
(xiv) The RWH storage facility to be designed to collect maximum rainwater of all
catchment areas through networks of conveyance and / or storm drains. This may
be facilitated through creation of holding ponds, pump houses and network of pipes
according to the need of specific locations.
(xv) Prioritize surface water storage and reuse over ground water recharge. Artificial
Groundwater Recharge systems in places where it has been mandated by
regulations/CTOs/ local laws.
(xvi) The collected Rainwater in surface storage structures may be used as process water
or the plant. The study recommendation will also include Suitable treatment
mechanism for removal of floating debris and suspended matter from the rainwater.
(xvii) Adoption of right combination of superior state-of-the-art technologies and global
best practices to increase the quantity and quality of harvested rainwater
(xviii) Site specific suitable RWH scheme, complete with all civil, mechanical electrical and
instrumentation details for the project.
(xix) Identification of location for storage of water from roof top catchment areas as well
as surface run-off Study for the selection of location of appropriate storage area with
required dimensions, which needs to be based on the most economically feasible as
well as structurally stable solution
(xx) Coordination / liaison / support to obtain permission from Central Ground Water
Board/State Ground Water Board wherever it is mandatory under conditions of
Environmental Clearance/Consents.
(xxi) Study Report recommendations for calculating Rainwater Harvesting potential, for
deciding suitable technology, type of RWH options with design and drawing for new
harvesting facilities and augmentation of existing facilities, based on the following
aspects
a). Topographical and hydrological features of the area to delineate the watershed
and extent of water harvesting in the study area as per existing drainage system or
proposed additional drainage system, if any

2
b). Rainfall data to be obtained from the Indian Meteorological Dept./ State Ground
Water Authority.
c). Design rainfall depth (mm) and design intensity to consider along with techno-
economic aspects for evaluation of potential and corresponding proposed RWH
facility.
d). Probability of Flood within the study area and existing plant area (peak runoff
volumes),
e). Ground water recharge potential of existing and proposed facilities.
f). Augmentation of existing water storage facilities.
