INTRODUCTION:

The objective of this SBA was to investigate major factors which affect and
contribute to the population distribution and settlement across the area of Princes
Town, Trinidad. This area was chosen due to my familiarity with its geography and
disposition. Population distribution is used to describe how people are spread across
a specific area, while the settlement describes a branch of human geography that
investigates the earth's surface's part settled by humans.
AIM:

Why did people choose to settle in Princes Town, South Trinidad and how has
population density and distribution affected settlement in the Princes Town area?

METHODOLOGY:

The data used was collected using a questionnaire and posted on social media due
to the inability to conduct surveys physically because of the covid-19 pandemic
protocols. My class was divided into groups and worked on questions to be used for
the final questionnaire. The questionnaire was then created using google forms and
on the 17/09/2021 the questionnaire was posted on the social media platform,
WhatsApp, for residents of Princess Town, Trinidad to complete. After the form
was filled in by these individuals the data collected was compiled to construct
graphs, etc. Secondary data used included definitions and information on the topic
of population distribution and settlement from the book (The Caribbean
Environment for CSEC Geography- Mark Wilson), which helped to carry out the
conduct of my research efficiently.

DISCUSSION:

This research was conducted with the help of residents of Princes Town by
completing a survey, after the collection, tabulation, and analysis of data it was
clearly indicated of the following: Most participants of the survey were between the
ages of 18 and 25. Most people lived in the area for over 12 years. The reason most
of the participants live in this area is for easy shopping and business and less crime.
The reason for most participants disliking this area is because of poor roads. 75% of
participants indicated that they would leave Prince Town soon. The reason for most
migrants leaving the area was for convenience. Most people that indicated they
would like to move wanted to move to St. Joseph and the area where most
participants in Princes Town lived was Buen Intento.
CONCLUSION:

Most of the settlement in Princes Town is nucleated (small and random clusters of
settlement) and linear (close to roads for easy access). Most of Princes Town is flat
which is ideal for housing construction.
Princes Town is a community that has grown due to several factors, such as job
opportunities, access to public facilities, housing etc. It is considered a shopping
town; however, it was originally established as an Amerindian mission.
The town served as a means of various transport. It took people from Princes Town
to San Fernando. It still serves as a gateway to other towns such as Moruga, Rio
Claro, etc. connecting them to other parts of the country.
Due to all these resources the town is conveniently located. People prefer to live in
Princes Town because they are close to family and have lived there for more than
12 years. According to the data, most of the people who took part in the survey live
in St. Croix and Buen Intento.
A small number of people live in less well-known areas such as Hillside Gardens,
and Realistic Road. Since participants in this survey were raised in Princes Town,
many people voted on the questionnaire that they live there by default, marriage,
and other reasons.
People had differing opinions about the benefits of living in Princes town, but most
indicated that easy accessibility to facilities such as health, and shopping are the
most crucial factors. Many people who provided a disadvantage about living there
stated that air pollution and excessive traffic are the biggest drawbacks.
