Setting up CMOST Master Datasets

Overview
Through Builder you can create a CMOST master dataset (CMM file) or edit the parameters in
an existing CMOST master dataset. You can save the edited master dataset, or save it to a new
one. For information about CMOST, refer to the CMOST User Guide.

CMOST parameters can be associated with one or more keywords in the master dataset.

Through Builder, you can perform the following tasks:

· Open or create a CMOST master dataset (*.cmm) file

· Add and associate CMOST parameters. In addition to parameterizing keywords, you

can parameterize keywords in tables and formulas.

Note: Builder can be used as a CMM file editor, to take advantage of a keyword tree
view to facilitate the location and parameterization of keywords such as those associated
with hydraulic fractures, formulas, and permeability tables, which appear in the
RESULTS section at the end of the dataset. The information in the RESULTS section is
not used by the simulators, but is used by Builder, as outlined in subsequent sections.

· Edit CMOST parameters

· Delete CMOST parameters

· Save the current CMOST master dataset, or save it to a new master dataset.

Note: Although Builder provides a convenient way for locating and parameterizing certain
types of keywords, you will need to use the CMM file editor in CMOST to parameterize
complex keyword arrangements, such as those based on formulas, scripts, or include files.

Opening an Existing CMOST Master Dataset
You can open a CMM file in Builder in the following ways:

· In Launcher, open the folder containing the master dataset then drag the CMM file
onto the Builder icon.

· Open Builder. Click File | Open. In Windows Explorer, in the lower right corner,
select the CMM file type:

Browse to and select the CMM file and then click Open.

The CMM file will open in Builder and the CMOST Definition dialog box will be populated
and displayed accordingly, as shown in the following example:

Notes:

1. If you close the CMOST Definition dialog box, you will be prompted with a
message that this will also close the Builder session.

2. If there are parameters without default values, a message will be displayed asking
you to fill in the default values, otherwise Builder will not be able to load the CMM 
file properly.

Creating a CMM File

To create a CMM file:

1. Open the base dataset in Builder.

2. In the Builder menu bar, select Tools | CMOST Master Dataset Creator. A blank
CMOST Definition dialog box is displayed, with a tree view of the master dataset
displayed in the Value Selection area, and the location of the CMOST file prepopulated,
as shown below:

Adding Parameters to a CMM File
1. In the Value Selection area, open the tree view to the node containing the
parameter that you want to add. In the following example, we have opened the dataset
to Permeability I:

2. In the Value Selection table, click the data cell containing the keyword value for
the desired parameter. The Add button will be enabled, as shown below:

3. Click Add. A new parameter will be added to the Parameters table:

- Name: Created based on the keyword (and subkeyword, if appropriate) names.

You can click the cell and edit the name if desired.

Note: Once a parameter is entered in the Parameters table, its name will
appear in the drop-down list that opens when you double-click a value in the
Value Selection table, as long as the parameter is the same type as the selected
value (real or text). In the following example, we created parameter PermiCon
from PERMI CON then changed the parameter name to PermCon. When we
double-click the value in PERMJ CON, PermCon will appear in the drop-down
list for selection:

If we select PermCon in the above example, Number of Parameters Used for

Editing CMOST Parameters

In the Parameters table in the CMOST Definition dialog box, click the cell you want to edit,
either Name or Default Value, then type in the new values. Once you are finished your edits,
specify the file name and location as necessary, and then click Save Changes. The changes will
be saved to the CMM file.

Deleting CMOST Parameters

You can delete one or more CMOST parameters at the same time. All CMOST associations
belonging to the deleted parameters will also be deleted.

In the Parameters table:

1. Click the row number or numbers corresponding to the CMOST parameter or

parameters you want to delete. You can drag your mouse, or use the CTRL and SHIFT
keys to select multiple rows.

2. Click the Delete button at the right of the table. A message will be displayed
summarizing the parameters that will be deleted, and asking you to confirm the deletion.

3. Click Yes to proceed.

4. Click Save Changes to commit the deletions or Cancel to retain the parameters.

Saving the Master Dataset

After you complete your changes, save the CMOST master dataset, as follows:

1. In the CMOST Definition dialog box, click Save Changes to save the CMOST
master dataset (CMM) file. You can change the file name or location by typing it
directly or using the Browse button.

2. After you save the CMM file, click OK. The CMOST Definition dialog box will
close and so will Builder.

Parameterizing Relative Permeability Correlations
In CMOST, you may want to see how changes in relative permeability tables will affect
reservoir properties. When working in Builder, relative permeability tables are typically
modified by changing the end points associated with the table then directing Builder to
recalculate the table values based on available correlations. The following steps show how
Builder can be used to modify the end point values for CMOST parameterization.

1. In Builder, open the CMM file that has the relative permeability table or tables.
The CMOST Definition dialog box will be displayed.

2. Expand the Builder Key Words | Rel. Perm. Tables node in the Value Selection
tree view, then select the relative permeability table you want to parameterize, for
example:

3. As shown above, select Silent Execution if you want the permeability table to be
recalculated whenever Builder is instructed by CMOST to run silently and modify the
CMM file.

4. Click Show data to view the permeability table:

5. Perform the same steps as you would for adding a normal CMOST parameter
association, for example:

Parameterizing Formulas
Note: Refer to Formula Manager for information about creating and modifying formulas in
Builder.

The steps for parameterizing a Builder formula are as follows:

1. In Builder, open the CMM file that contains the formula you want to parameterize.
The CMOST Definition dialog box will be displayed.

2. Expand the Builder Key Words | Formulae node in the Value Selection tree
view, then select the formula you want to parameterize, for example:

3. As shown above, select Silent Execution if you want the formula to be calculated
and applied whenever Builder is instructed by CMOST to run silently and modify the
CMM file.

4. Click Show data to view the formula:

In the above formula (Scheme1 = X0**1.05 + X1×2), assume we want to

parameterize power coefficient ‘1.05’ and multiplier ‘2’.

5. Click the cell containing coefficient ‘1.05’ and then click Add. A new parameter is
added to the Parameters table. Repeat for the cell containing coefficient ‘2’. The
CMOST Definition dialog box will appear as follows:

Parameterizing Hydraulic Fractures
To use Builder to parameterize hydraulic fractures:

1. Open the CMM file in Builder. The CMOST Definition dialog box will open.

2. Expand the Hydraulic Fractures node in the Value Selection tree to view the
fracture templates or stages that you want to parameterize, for example:

3. As shown above, check Silent Execution if you want the dataset to be adjusted
based on CMOST-provided values for selected fracture template or stage parameters
whenever Builder is instructed by CMOST to run silently and, using the Hydraulically
Fractured Wells wizard, modify the temporary dataset that CMOST has submitted to
it. In the above example, if Silent Execution is selected, all parameterized values in
Template Parameters will be adjusted, where necessary.

Note: As shown in the above example, the Silent Execution setting will be
disabled until you have parameterized at least one parameter.

4. Select the fracture template or stage parameters that you want to parameterize:

5. Select the first parameter cell that you want to parameterize and then click Add.
Repeat for other cells, as necessary. Fracture parameters will be added to the
Parameters table, as shown in the following example, where we have parameterized
BWHLEN, the fracture half length, and INNERWIDTH, the effective fracture width
used by the simulator:
