OLHUM001 | ASSIGNMENT CHAPTER 1

1. What is ART?
- Art is generally understood as any activity or product done by people with a
communicative or aesthetic purpose something that expresses an idea, an emotion or,
more generally, a world view. It is a component of culture, reflecting economic and
social substrates in its design. Art has generally fallen into three
categories: representation, expression, and form. Art as Representation or Mimesis.
Plato first developed the idea of art as “mimesis,” which, in Greek, means copying or
imitation. Art can uplift, provoke, soothe, entertain, and educate us and is an
important part of our lives. At its most profound level, it takes us from the everyday
to a place of introspection and contemplation, to see the bigger picture of the human
condition.
2. How can you apply art in your daily life?
- Art gives meaning to our lives and helps us understand our world. It is an essential
part of our culture because it allows us to have a deeper understanding of our
emotions; it increases our self-awareness, and allows us to be open to new ideas and
experiences. Learning through and about the arts enriches the experience of studying
while at school as well as preparing students for life after school. Arts
subjects encourage self-expression and creativity and can build confidence as well as
a sense of individual identity. Art brings a sense of enjoyment and pleasure. Art
allows for the expression of truth and beliefs. It portrays various ideas, feelings such
as triumph, love, happiness, sorrow, and boredom. Each message behind art shows
ideas that are relevant to the society.
