I. Direction: Answer the following questions.

1. What is literature?
- literature is writings in which expression and form, in connection with ideas of
permanent and universal interest, are characteristic or essential features, as poetry,
novels, history, biography, and essays. Literature is any collection of written work,
but it is also used more narrowly for writings specifically considered to be an art
form, especially prose fiction, drama, and poetry.
2. How would you describe the literature in the Philippines?
- Philippine literature is literature associated with the Philippines from prehistory,
through its colonial legacies, and on to the present. Pre-Hispanic Philippine literature
was epics passed on from generation to generation, originally through an oral
tradition.
3. What is the significance of literature to culture in tradition?
- Literature allows a person to step back in time and learn about life on Earth from the
ones who walked before us. We can gather a better understanding of culture and have
a greater appreciation of them. We learn through the ways history is recorded, in the
forms of manuscripts and through speech itself.
II. Direction: Explain the different types of literary genre.
1. Poetry
- Poetry is one genre of literature. It is difficult to define what poetry is since its forms
can differ widely at its core, though, poetry is rhythmic writing that is meant to
express or elicit an emotional response. There are several genre characteristics
specific to poetry. Poems are usually shorter in length than other genres of literature.
Poetry often draws heavily on imagery and figurative language to appeal to the
reader's imagination. Poetry is usually arranged in lines and stanzas. Some poetry
follows rules regarding the number of syllables within each line, and some poetry,
called free verse, follows no rules. Poetry can also follow rhyming patterns, but
rhyming is not a requirement.
2. Prose
- Prose is verbal or written language that follows the natural flow of speech. It is the
most common form of writing, used in both fiction and non-fiction. Prose comes from
the Latin “prosa oratio,” meaning “straightforward.”
3. Drama
- a drama is the portrayal of fictional or non-fictional events through the performance
of written dialog (either prose or poetry). Dramas can be performed on stage, on film,
or the radio.
4. Non-fiction
- Literary nonfiction is, “An umbrella term that includes all writing that is based in
reality and has been written with specific attention to the craft of writing, using
literary techniques to talk about subjects that are not made up.”
5. Media
- This categorization was created to encompass the many new and important kinds of
texts in our society today, such as movies and films, websites, commercials,
billboards, and radio programs. Any work that does not exist primarily as a written
text can probably be considered media, particularly if it relies on recently developed
technologies. Media literature can serve a wide variety of purposes among other
things it can educate, entertain, advertise, and/or persuade. More and more educators
are coming to recognize the importance of teaching media in the classroom.
