COMPLEMENTING FOOD VOCABULARY
Practice the vocabulary and then make a conversation similar to the example
❖ ORAL PART: Then, complete the food pictures with the appropriate containers.
Hate, like, love and prefer
❖ We can use hate, like, love and prefer with an -ing form or with a to-infinitive:
I hate to see food being thrown away. ------------------------------ form.
I love going to the cinema. ___________________ form.
I prefer listening to the news on radio than watching it on TV. ____________________form.
He prefers not to wear a tie to work. _____________________________form.
In American English, the forms with to-infinitive are much more common than the –ing form.
There is a very small difference in meaning between the two forms. The -ing form emphasizes the action or experience. The to-
infinitive gives more emphasis to the results of the action or event. We often use the -ing form to suggest enjoyment (or lack of it),
and the to-infinitive form to express habits or preferences.
Compare
1.-We have a lot of fruit in the garden. I like to make jam every year.
2.-I prefer to sort out a problem as soon as I can. a habit or preference
3.-If you prefer not to go camping there are youth hostels nearby.
The -ing form is more common than the to-infinitive form after hate and love:
❖ When we use would or ’d with hate, like, love, prefer, we use the to-infinitive, not the -ing form:
1.-We would love to hear you sing.
Not: We would love hearing you sing.
2.-They’d hate to cause a problem.
Not: They’d hate causing a problem.
3.-I’d prefer not to give you my name.
Not: I’d prefer not giving you my name.
❖ Would like
We use would like or ’d like to say politely what we want, especially when making offers and requests:
2.-Can you order for Ellie? She’d like the Margarita pizza, please
.
We use Do you like …? to ask about preferences in general. We don’t use Do you like …? to make offers or requests.
Compare
asks about likes and dislikes asks about likes and dislikes invites you to
offers Some rice
in general in general dance
Would like to have + -ed form
❖ We use would like to have + -ed form when talking about things in the past that we have missed:
