CURRENT ATCSITUATION

ANALYSIS
Today there are several problems affecting data exchange in ATM:

 Communications point to point.

 Private and dedicated interfaces

 Different visions of the same flight

 Isolated planning’s affecting a flight through its whole life time

WHAT IS IOP-G?

IOP CONCEPT

The main objective of the InterOPerability Ground (IOP-G) concept is to

allow a different set of heterogeneous systems to maintain a consistent
view of the flight data, and to allow them to coordinate changes to that
flight data even between systems that are not yet operationally
responsible for the flight

6
WHAT IS IOP-G?

IOP-G ALLOWS…

In a few words IOP-G can be summarized as a mean to grant:

 A common view of a flight through the set of heterogeneous

systems which will be interested in the flight during its lifetime.

 A technical mean to support a collaborative approach for

building the shared flight vision. That is, system actions over a
flight are instantly distributed and even agreed between different
systems

However, IOP-G will not be possible without an infrastructure...

HOW IOP-G WORKS

SHARING INFORMATION 1/3

A flight is going to cross from MAASTRICHT to KARSLRUHE ATCs,
both IOP-G enabled ATC systems before starting the approach to a
destination airport.

All the systems have the same vision of that flight

FO
FO
FO

The first IOP-G ATC, MAASTRICHT system, creates and distributes by

SWIM the Flight Object, containing all the flight information especially the
trajectory, to the next IOP ATC system including destination airport. 14
HOW IOP-G WORKS

SHARING INFORMATION 2/3

Due to meteorological conditions the pilot requests a route change to the
under control MAASTRICHT ATC system

The controller from the MAASTRICHT IOP-G ATC System responsible

for the flight instructs to the pilot for a new route

The controller from the current ATC System

introduces this route change in the system

15
HOW IOP-G WORKS

SHARING INFORMATION 3/3

In the interoperability IOP-G environment the change into the route is
spread to KARLSRUHE ATC and the destination airport.

The reception of the Flight Object in the next ATC system allows
to use this information on ATC Tools.
FO
FO
FO

Destination Airport should re-planning the arrival for the flight avoiding
unwanted holdings with the consequent extra fuel consumption 16

NAS Flight Object

 A flight object is defined as a collection of common

information elements describing an individual flight
and available electronically for use by both the NAS
users and the ATM service providers,
 Facilitates the sharing of common flight information
elements among the various capabilities.
Flight Object Organization

• The flight as filed portion of the flight object contains

information from NAS user personnel and capabilities.
This portion of the flight object could extend beyond
today’s filed flight plan to include flight intent and user
preferences.
• The flight as cleared portion of the flight object
contains information from ATM service providers and
capabilities, such as clearances and possible flight
plan amendments.
• The flight as flown portion of the flight object
contains information from sensors and pilot reports,
including position reports and reported flight
conditions.
