University Lecturer: Mrs. Makelesi Driu Date: 22/09/22

A brief summary of the lesson:

Organic chemistry is the study of the preparation, properties, identification and reactions of
compounds of carbon which are not classified as inorganic. This section focuses on the
organic materials such as alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alcohols, carboxylic acids, esters,
aldehydes, ketones, amines and some other derivatives of carboxylic acids. Isomerism is the
phenomenon whereby compounds with the same molecular formula exist in different forms
due to the different arrangement of the atoms. The concept of isomerism illustrates the
fundamental importance of molecular structure and shape in organic chemistry.
