A brief summary of the lesson:

Taxonomic classification is a method of organizing different species of life on Earth. The

taxonomic classification system used by scientists is ranked, or hierarchical. This means that
the categories become more and more specific until the last level of species is reached.
‘Species’ is the most specific category for life on Earth. Different species are identified
by binomial nomenclature, which uses the last two taxonomic levels, genus, and species as
the identifier of the organism. The Swedish botanist Carolus Linnaeus is considered the father
of taxonomic classification and created the basis for the system scientists use today in the
1700s. Today, we use genetic information to classify organisms into taxonomic groups, but
Carolus Linnaeus originally used morphological features. Thus, as scientists have learned
more about life on Earth the original categories Linnaeus proposed needed to be edited and
new ones added.

 Year 13 Biology for All  Lesson notes
 Lesson notes  Writing materials
 Interactive Board  Note book
Intended learning outcomes:

 Research and present on the history of the different classification systems

 Study the taxonomic rank of organisms in the three-domain and 6 kingdom system of
taxonomy
 Describe and explain the three characteristics used to place organisms into domains
