Learning Outcomes: LA 1.20 Build and combine words with a variety of long and short vowel
sounds, including Multisyllabic words

Objectives: Through the use of finger puppets and songs, students will be able to:
1. Identify long and short vowel sounds. (c)
2. Match words under short or long vowel columns. (P)
3. Value the importance of short and long vowel sounds. (A)

Concepts: What are vowels? The letters A, E, I, O, U are called vowels. The other letters in the
alphabet are called consonants.

In English, the sounds of the vowels are group into two pairs: short vowels and long vowels. The
short vowels are pronounced as follows:

 "a" as in "bat"
 "e" as in "bed"
 "i" as in "bit"
 "o" as in "bog"
 "u" as in "but"

The long vowels are pronounced as follows:

 "a" as in "haze"
 "e" as in "he"
 "i" as in "hi"
 "o" as in "hope"
 "u" as in "human"

Introduction: -students will observe vowel finger puppets


-teacher will elicit from students what are vowels
-students will sing the song “Old MacDonald Had Some Vowels”

Development: students will play a game


-teacher will draw a line on the floor and one side will be labelled short vowel and the other side
long vowel.
-teacher will say a word and students will jump on the side they believe is the answer.
-Class discussion will occur based on long and short vowel sounds.
-teacher will place a chart on the board that has the columns for long and short vowel sounds
-Students will be provided with a word.
-students will walk to the front and place their word under the corresponding column.

Closure: Students will play the game vowel dice

-Students will role a dice and give an example for the long or short vowel sound

Conclusion: Students will complete a worksheet on long and short vowel sounds
-Students will use their pencils to write the words under their corresponding vowel sound

Extended Activity: Students will create a pamphlet on short and long vowel sounds.
