Learning Outcomes: LA 1.20 Build and combine words with a variety of long and short vowel
sounds, including Multisyllabic words
Objectives: Through the use of finger puppets and songs, students will be able to:
1. Identify long and short vowel sounds. (c)
2. Match words under short or long vowel columns. (P)
3. Value the importance of short and long vowel sounds. (A)
Concepts: What are vowels? The letters A, E, I, O, U are called vowels. The other letters in the
alphabet are called consonants.
In English, the sounds of the vowels are group into two pairs: short vowels and long vowels. The
short vowels are pronounced as follows:
"a" as in "bat"
"e" as in "bed"
"i" as in "bit"
"o" as in "bog"
"u" as in "but"

-Students will role a dice and give an example for the long or short vowel sound
Conclusion: Students will complete a worksheet on long and short vowel sounds
-Students will use their pencils to write the words under their corresponding vowel sound
Extended Activity: Students will create a pamphlet on short and long vowel sounds.
