MARKS
Q.1 (a) Write short note on “Swaying Couple”. 03
(b) Explain the direct and reverse crank method for determining unbalanced 04
force in radial engine.
(c) Prove that the resultant unbalanced force is minimum when half of the 07
reciprocating masses are balanced by rotating masses, i.e., when c = ½.

Q.2 (a) Explain clearly the term static balancing and dynamic balancing. State 03
necessary condition to achieve them.
(b) Discuss how a single revolving mass is balanced by two masses 04
revolving in different planes.
(c) The bearing of as shaft A and B are 5 m apart. The shaft carries three 07
eccentric masses C, D and E, which are 160 kg, 170 kg and 85 kg
respectively. The respective eccentricity of each masses measured from
axis of rotation is 0.5 cm, 0.3 cm, and 0.6 cm and distance from A is 1.3
m, 3 m, and 4 m respectively. Determine angular position of each mass
with respect to C so that no dynamic force at B and also find dynamic
force at A for this arrangement when the shaft runs at 100
rpm.(Analytical Method)
OR
(c) The reciprocating mass per cylinder in a 60° V-twin engine is 1.5 kg. The 07
stroke is 10 cm for each cylinder. If the engine runs at 1800 rpm,
determine the maximum and minimum values of the primary forces and
find out the corresponding crank position.
Q.3 (a) Define the following term: 03
1. Damping factor 2. Magnification Factor 3. Resonance
(b) What are the reasons for unbalance in rotating machine elements? Give two 04
practical examples of rotating unbalance in the system.
(c) Write down the differential equation of motion for the vibrating system 07
shown in Fig.1 for free vibration, using D’Alembert’s principle and
express its natural frequency in Hz using system parameters as given.
OR
Q.3 (a) What is vibration isolation? Discuss in brief different material used for 03
vibration isolation.

provided is only 25 % of the critical value. Determine (i) the damping
ratio, (ii) critical damping coefficient, (iii) natural frequency of damped
vibration, (iv) logarithmic decrement, (v) the ratio of two successive
amplitudes.
