MARKS
Q.1 (a) Explain how transmission lines are classified? 03
(b) With the help of appropriate examples, explain the difference between 04
symmetrical and unsymmetrical faults.

(c) Derive the expression for velocity of travelling wave through an overhead 07

switching instant so that dc offset current is zero?
OR
(c) Derive the expression for sequence impedance of transmission lines. 07
Comment on the results derived.

Q.3 (a) Define voltage regulation of transmission line. What should be the ideal 03

(b) What is characteristic impedance of a transmission line? If a certain 04
transmission line has inductance L = 80 mH and capacitance C = 5μF, what
will be the value of its characteristic impedance?
(c) Using rigorous solution method, derive the expression for A,B,C,D 07
constants of long transmission lines in terms of hyperbolic sine and cosine
terms
OR

machine
(b) Derive the equation for sending end voltage and current for a line 04
represented by nominal-T method
(c) A substation as shown in shown in figure receives 5 MVA at 6 kV, 0.85 pf 07
lagging on the low voltage side of transformer from a power station through
a cable having per phase resistance and reactance of 8Ω and 2.5Ω. Identical
6.6/33 kV transformers are installed at each end of the line. The 6.6 kV side
of the transformers is delta connected while 33 kV is star connected. The
resistance and reactance of the star connected windings are 0.5Ω and 3.75Ω

1
respectively, and for the delta connected windings are 0.06Ω and 0.36Ω
respectively. What is the voltage at the sending end?

Q.4 (a) A certain generator having solidly grounded neutral has X1 = X2 = 0.2 pu 03
and X0 = 0.05 pu. For a line-to line fault, calculate the value of positive and
negative sequence component of current Ia1 and Ia2. Neglect fault
impedance.
(b) Explain why capacitance switching presents a very duty on the circuit 04
breaker?
(c) Two 11 kV, 12 MVA, 3-Ф star connected generators operate in parallel. 07
