Why teach Engineering?
Engineering is EVERYWHERE! Almost everything we eat, wear, ride, or use has
been touched by an engineer who designed, created, or modified it in some way.
Think about it! Just look around and see if you can find something that has not
been affected in some way by an engineer.
Engineering is CREATIVE. I have been teaching creative problem solving since I
first began teaching gifted in 1978. To me, engineering is creative problem solving
at its finest. What better way is there to combine creativity with math and science
and make it applicable to the real world?
Engineering teaches students to THINK CRITICALLY. The engineering process
requires students to use the highest levels of thinking as they Analyze, Create, and
Evaluate their designs.
Engineering requires students to WORK IN GROUPS. Gone are the days of working
independently. Our kiddos have to learn to work collaboratively.
Engineering teaches PERSISTENCE. Failure is inherent in the engineering design process.
Students learn to examine designs that do not work and modify them so they can solve the problem.
This may require them to modify their designs and revise them several times.
Engineering is FUN and ENGAGING! In studying about the brain and learning, we know that
students remember best information that is fun and engaging. Students love design engineering
challenges while learning important science and math concepts at the same time!
These are the six posters included in this product!
Posters are available in black and white and in two sizes!
I like to have each child keep an Engineer’s Journal. I have a cover for both boys and girls
and journal pages for the students to track each stage of the Engineering Design Process.
These pages are available in two sizes – full 8 ½ by 11, and two to a page.
For just a little added bonus, I
added 8 design challenges I have used
with my students. These are short,
quick challenges to introduce your
kiddos to the engineering design
process! I chose these challenges
because they are quick, fun, and
require materials that are readily
available and inexpensive.
