• The operator of the 1D SCANNER must have a working knowledge of
radiation physics and dosimetry, and must have experience working with
treatment machines and accessories.
• The operator of the 1D SCANNER bears the full responsibility for validating
measurement results.

Description

The Model 1233 1D SCANNER consists of 2 main components: a water tank and a mechanical
arm with a control interface, which is attached to the water tank. The combination of tank and
motor controlled vertical scanning arm enable the positioning of a waterproof radiation detector
at a depth range (in water) from 0 to 310 mm while providing an unobstructed horizontal clearance
enabling up to 25 cm cone measurement. The water surface is detected with a sensor which
locates the detector position with respect to the water surface. A stationary mount is provided for
a reference detector. Controls are provided for remote or local operation to allow user to position
the detector. (Detector and electrometer are not provided as part of the Model 1233.)
The 1D Scanner has internal dimensions of 356.9 mm x 387.4 mm horizontal surface and 358.8
mm depth.

Application

The user selects an electrometer and radiation detector(s) that will satisfy the QA requirements of
the institution, then the equipment is connected to the 1D SCANNER, the tank is filled to the
desired depth, and the 1D SCANNER is calibrated. Then, the radiation detector position is
positioned at a depth for measurement using the buttons on the scanning arm (local control) or
using a PC with the 1D SCANNER software (remote control).
A measurement is collected at the desired depth and the electrometer reading is recorded. The
results are used to measure and trend the nominal performance of various parameters associated
with the therapeutic radiation machine over extended periods to detect changes.
The 1D SCANNER is not to be used to adjust the radiation machine; another device intended to
calibrate the radiation machine is used. If results from the 1D SCANNER measurements conflict
with expected behavior, then independent calibration tools are used to isolate and correct the
conflict.

panel but do not connect power to the 1D SCANNER at this time.
• In the treatment room, connect the flat communications cable (Part Number 1133550) to
the 1D SCANNER and connect the other end to the PC Electrometer.
• In the treatment room, connect detectors to the PC Electrometer. Both detectors must
have the same voltage; use the same type detector if possible. Consult the PC
Electrometer’s product manual for connection instructions and adapter requirements, if
applicable.
• In the treatment room, place the PC Electrometer at least 10 m (33 feet) from the beam,
in the lowest scatter area.
3 Do not connect the PDI 2.0 USB cables to the computer at this time. The USB cables will be
connected when software is launched.
4 Connect the power supply to a grounded mains power outlet (100-240 V AC, 48-62 Hz).

Note: See the SNC Dosimetry Software Reference Guide for instructions to verify
communication with the 1D SCANNER.

18 Section 3. Hardware Setup

4 Set up 1DS for Measurements
Types of Measurements

The 1D Scanner can be used for the following types of measurements:

• Percent Depth Dose—measurements over a range of field sizes with a specified increment
between field sizes. For ionization curves, place a reference detector at a fixed position in the
beam.
• Output Factor—measures the change in radiation output relative to increasing field size.
• Absolute Dosimetry—absolute dose measurements according to testing protocols such as
Report 46, Comprehensive QA for Radiation Oncology, as recommended by the AAPM Task
Group #40.
• Energy Check—ratio of readings at two depths.

Set up the 1D SCANNER

Leveling
For correct measurements, the detector must scan perpendicular to the water surface. If desired
for leveling the tank, the Sun Nuclear Leveling Platform, Model 1080, may be used (see
“Accessories” on page 39 for more details). Without the leveling platform, scan direction can be
adjusted using the thumbscrews on the scanning assembly (see “Align Detector to Beam Axis”
below).
1 If using a Sun Nuclear Leveling Platform, place it on the couch and then adjust the leveling
feet until the bubble levels show that the platform is level (the bubble is centered between
the two indicator lines).
2 Place the 1D SCANNER on the treatment couch (or on top of the Leveling Platform, if used).
3 Align the lasers to the scribe lines on the tank’s bottom panel. The scribe lines indicate the
field center, not the tank center. When the scribe lines on the tank’s bottom panel are aligned
to the cross hairs on the Leveling Platform, the water tank will overhang the Leveling Platform
slightly along one side.

Align Detector to Beam Axis

The black thumbscrews on the scanning assembly are used for aligning the motion of the detector
to the beam axis and locking the arm in place.
1 Remove the detector holder from the scanning arm, then use the control panel to move the
scanning arm to the bottom of the tank (see “Control Panel” on page 5).
2 With a level mounted on the scanning arm and perpendicular to the scanning arm, adjust the
top thumbscrew (see #1 in the illustration below) until the scanning arm is level.

3 Thumbscrews outside the

tank lock the scanning
assembly into place

Figure 4-1. Thumbscrews to Secure Scanning Arm and Align Detector

3 Place a level on the scanning arm, parallel to the scanning arm. Adjust both thumbscrews
inside the tank simultaneously until the scanning arm is level (see #2 in Figure 4-1).
4 Visually align the scanning arm to the crosshair graphic on the bottom of the 1D SCANNER
tank by shifting the scanning assembly on the tank wall and adjusting either of the
thumbscrews inside the tank (see #2 in Figure 4-1).
5 Reinstall the detector holder and insert a field detector in the detector holder. See “Install
Detector in Detector Holder” on page 12.
6 Place the detector at the central axis position. If the detector is not in the beam center, adjust
by sliding the scanning assembly on the tank wall and moving the detector holder on the
scanning arm.
7 Lock the scanning assembly into position using the thumbscrews outside the tank (see #3 in
Figure 4-1).
8 Use the control panel to move the scanning arm vertically. The crosshairs should remain
centered on the detector. If not, repeat steps 1 through 7.

Filling the Tank

Before filling the tank with water, ensure that an accidental water leakage will not cause any
damage to the building or other equipment. Take care not to splash water or other liquid on the
1D SCANNER parts that are outside of the water tank (i.e., the control module, the power supply,
the PDI 2.0, cables, etc.). The equipment is water resistant, but not waterproof.
Distilled water is recommended for the 1D SCANNER system. Tap water and demineralized (or
deionized) water are not recommended. Follow the instructions below to fill the water tank.
1 Fill the tank to the desired depth (if using the water changer device, see “Filling the Tank from
the House Water Supply” on page 21). To use the water sensor, the water level must not
exceed 335 mm.
2 Inspect the tank as it fills to verify that there are no leaks.
3 Visually verify that the detector holder is level to the water surface. Only verify whether the
detector holder is level, not whether the detector holder intersects the water surface. This will
occur after calibration and homing is complete. If the detector holder is not level to the water
surface, adjust the Leveling Platform accordingly.

Note: Do not move the 1D SCANNER water tank when it is filled with water.

Filling the Tank from the House Water Supply

CAUTION: Sun Nuclear recommends using distilled water in the 1D SCANNER water
tank (see “Filling the Tank” on page 20).

Use these instructions when filling the tank from the tap. If using distilled water, simply pour the
water into the 1D SCANNER from the containers.
1 Attach the water flow assembly to the faucet (Figure 4-4).

Note: If necessary, attach the faucet adapter. The provided o-ring must be installed in the
adapter end that connects to the faucet.

• Do not turn on the faucet yet.

2 Place the tube assembly in the water tank.

3 Turn the flow control valves to the positions shown in (Figure 4-4).
4 Turn on the faucet and fill the 1D SCANNER water tank to the desired level.
5 When complete, turn off the faucet and then move the flow control valve on the tube
assembly to the closed position (Figure 4-4).

Note: Water flow can be turned off while filling or draining by closing the flow
control valve on the tube assembly.

6 Carefully remove the tube assembly from the water tank, ensuring that water does not drip
on the scanning arm, and then place the tube assembly into the sink.

Draining the Tank

1 Ensure that the water flow assembly is attached to the faucet (Figure 4-5).
• Do not turn on the faucet yet.
2 Partially submerge the tube assembly in the water tank and then move both flow control
valves to the open position (Figure 4-5).

Figure 4-5. Valve Positions for Draining the Tank

3 Turn on the faucet. This will start the siphon action and begin draining water from the tank.

Note: Do not press the tube assembly against the bottom panel of the tank. Keep it at a
slight tilt to maintain the siphon action.

4 When draining is complete turn off the faucet, and then carefully remove the tube assembly
from the water tank, ensuring that water does not drip water on the scanning arm. Place the
tube assembly in the sink.
5 Disconnect the water flow assembly from the faucet. Elevate one end of the water changer
and coil the hose.
6 Empty the rest of the water from the tank and dry before storing.

22 Section 4. Set up 1DS for Measurements

Positioning the Reference Detector(s)

1 Position the gantry so that the beam will be directed vertically downward.

WARNING: Ensure that the electronics area of the scanning assembly will not be in
the direct beam.

2 Adjust the primary radiation detector so that it is centered in the central axis of the beam.
3 If using a reference detector, adjust the flexible arm on the reference detector holder to the
desired position, while adhering to the following rules:
• Keep the reference detector within the primary radiation field for a stable signal.
• Place the reference detector in a location where it will be fully irradiated (not in the
penumbra) but ensure that it does not shadow the primary detector.
4 Place the ODI Check on the surface of the water, adjust the table to achieve the desired SSD,
then remove the ODI Check.

Note: A 25 cm electron applicator fits inside the tank for measurements at 100 cm SSD.

Calibration

CAUTION: If the 1D SCANNER is not properly calibrated, inaccurate readings could

result.

The calibration procedure can be performed in the treatment room using the control panel on the
1D SCANNER scanning arm, or from the control room using the SNC Dosimetry software. See the
SNC Dosimetry Reference Guide or Online Help for details.

Positioning the Reference Detector(s) 23

Water Surface Detection
Note: Press and hold the CAL button to start the calibration and move the detector
holder up until the upper limit switch is found. While moving upward, motion can be
halted immediately by releasing the CAL button. This safety measure prevents the
detector from interfering with the electron applicator. Once the detector holder starts
moving back down, calibration will continue until complete.

CAUTION:
• To prevent damage to the 1D SCANNER tank when using an vertical
detector, do not install a vertical detector until calibration is complete.
• To prevent damage to the detector when using an electron cone, make sure
the detector does not hit the electron cone during calibration. When the
scanning arm is moving upward, movement can be halted by releasing the
CAL button.

Press and hold the CAL button.

• The detector holder will start moving up until it finds the scanning arm upper limit switch
(“HOMING” displays on the control panel).
• Then, the detector holder moves back down (“LMT FND” displays on the control panel).
• When the detector holder starts moving back down and “LMT FND“ displays, release the CAL
button.
• Calibration will continue until complete:
• The detector holder will move down until it finds the water’s surface.
• Then, the detector holder will move -0.4 cm below the surface, return to the surface, and
center the detector.
• The message “0.00 cm“ displays on the control panel.

Note: If error tones sound or if any messages appear on the control panel that were
not mentioned in the above steps, see “Troubleshooting” on page 55.

Calibration – SNC Dosimetry Software

When the SNC Dosimetry software is used, the calibration can be performed from the treatment
room using the SNC Dosimetry software.
1 After connecting the flat communications cable to the Communications port below the 1D
SCANNER control panel, launch the SNC Dosimetry software.
2 If not already connected, connect the USB cable to the PDI 2.0 and to the computer.
3 After a few moments, the SNC Dosimetry software should recognize that the 1D SCANNER
is plugged in and available. The following user interface changes should occur.
• The lock icon in the ’Auto Setup’ area of the screen changes to a plugged in icon (Figure
4-6).
• The message, "You are connected," displays and includes the serial number and firmware
revision (if available).
• The 1D SCANNER setup instructions are displayed.
If these changes do not occur, disconnect the USB cable from the computer, check the cable
and power connections (see “1D SCANNER with PC Electrometer and SNC Dosimetry Soft-
ware” on page 17), and then reconnect the USB cable.

Note: If error tones sound or if any messages appear on the control panel that were
not mentioned in the above steps, see “Troubleshooting” on page 55.

Set the ‘Home’ Position

The home position is the 0.00 cm position that will be used during measurement. The home
position can be modified, if needed.
1 After calibrating, visually verify that the detector center intersects and is level to the water
surface.
2 If necessary, add an offset to account for the distance from the physical center of the detector
to the effective center. Consult the detector’s product manual or specifications to determine
the distance.
To add an offset, press the appropriate increment button on the control panel and then press
the Up or Down button.
3 When the detector is at the correct position, press the SET button to save the new “home”
position.
The control panel should now display “0.00 cm“. The position displayed on the control panel
must correspond to the actual position.

Calibration 25
Verify Leveling
1 Move the scanning arm down until the maximum range is reached. For example, to move the
detector 30 cm, press the 10 cm button then press the Down arrow button three times.
2 As the detector traverses vertically, verify that it does not deviate from the central axis (as
indicated by the image of the positioning lasers).
Any deviation of the detector from the central axis as the detector is moved away from the
water surface indicates that the scanning arm is not properly leveled.
3 Press the HOME button to return the scanning arm to the 0.00 cm position.

Note: If any positioning issues or damage are suspected, contact Sun Nuclear. See
“Contacting Customer Support” on page 58.

5 Measurement

Note: If using the SNC Dosimetry software for measurements, see the SNC Dosimetry
Reference Guide or Online Help for details.

Launch Software

The 1D SCANNER software allows the user to adjust the position and speed of the detector holder
from the control room. It also allows the user to log data as the detector moves. Use of the 1D
SCANNER software is optional when the 1D SCANNER is connected to a third-party electrometer.

Note: Do not launch software while the motor is in motion.

1 Connect the USB cable to the PDI 2.0 and the computer.
2 If this computer was previously used with another SNC instrument that connects via a PDI
2.0, the existing USB drivers will be recognized automatically. Otherwise, the PDI 2.0 USB
drivers will be installed at this time. Wait a few seconds before continuing. When the USB
driver installation is complete, a pop-up message is displayed in the taskbar, such as “Your
new hardware is installed and ready to use” or “Device driver software installed successfully”,
depending on the PC’s operating system.
Note: If one of the messages listed above is NOT displayed, or an error message is
displayed, see the “Troubleshooting” section of the PDI 2.0 bulletin that is included
with the PDI 2.0 device.

3 Double-click the PC Electrometer / 1D SCANNER desktop icon to launch the program.

• If a message appears indicating that the device could not be found, check the cable
connections and then retry the software launch. If the message is still displayed, the USB
drivers may need to be installed manually. See “USB Drivers - Troubleshooting” on
page 58 for driver installation instructions.
• For a description of the software controls, see “Software Interface” on page 35.

Measure

CAUTION: When controlling the scanning arm from outside the treatment room and
performing in-air scans, the detector arm can travel to the top of the scanning range.
If an electron cone is installed, the arm may collide with the electron cone.

1 The logging feature can automatically record the 1D SCANNER time and position readings
(and PC Electrometer charge and current readings, if PC Electrometer is used) to a text file or
an Excel spreadsheet. Perform the following steps to use the logging feature.
• Click Data Logging then select the type of log (Text file or Excel spreadsheet).

Note: The Excel option can only be used if Microsoft Excel is installed on the computer.

Measure 27
• If Text is selected, double-click the box below Data Logging. The ‘Save Electrometer Log
File As’ window is displayed. Select or create a text file for use. When ready to begin,
click Start Logging.
• If Excel is selected, click Run to begin logging.

Note: Data is logged every 20 ms with a 1D SCANNER attached or every 500 ms with
both a 1D SCANNER and PC Electrometer attached, except in the case of the Scan
Functions which log at 100 ms.

2 Using the buttons on the control panel or the 1D SCANNER software, move the detector
holder to the desired initial depth.

Note: To prevent damage to the device, do not allow the direct beam to fall on the
electronics area of the scanning arm. Prolonged exposure of the electronics to direct
radiation may void the warranty.

3 Activate the beam.

Note: When logging to an Excel spreadsheet, always close the Excel program after the
log session is complete.

Post Measurement

When a measurement session is complete, perform the following steps:

1 Disconnect power from the electrometer.
2 Disconnect the radiation detectors from the electrometer.
3 Move the detector holder back to the upper position.
4 Disconnect the reference detector holder from the tank.

Note: When removing parts from the tank, ensure that water does not drip on nearby
equipment.

5 Disconnect the radiation detectors from the detector holders and dry before storing.
6 Disconnect the water sensor cable and power/data cable from the scanning arm and dry
before storing.
7 Disconnect the scanning arm from the water tank and dry before storing.
8 Disconnect the detector holder(s) from the scanning arm and dry before storing.
• Use extreme care when drying the 1D SCANNER system. Use a soft sponge that does
not have a a rough scrubbing surface, or a soft cotton cloth that does not have loose
threads which can snag on mechanical parts.
• Lightly dab the mechanical parts to dry them. Do not use excessive pressure.
9 Drain the water from the tank using the provided water changing device (see “Draining the
Tank” on page 22).
10 Empty any remaining water from the tank and dry before storing.

28 Section 5. Measurement
6 Advanced Features
Measuring Ionization Curve (With SNC PC Electrometer)

Software version 1.2.1 or higher simplifies the procedure to measure an ionization curve. The
simplified option is only available when both 1D SCANNER and PC Electrometer (Figure 6-1) are
connected. Ionization curves can be measured using the depth scan function or the step by step
scanning function.
With the continuous scan function, the starting and ending position, as well as the speed, are
entered to define the region of the scan.
With the step by step scan function, the starting and ending positions are entered to define the
region of the scan, along with the movement increment and the dwell time.
When the user clicks the Scan button, the 1D SCANNER moves to the defined starting position
and then prompts the user to indicate when the beam has been turned on. Then, the program
initiates data collection and moves the 1D SCANNER to the ending position using the selected
function.
The detector does not have to be manually set to the starting position, nor does the Start/Stop
button in the main window need to be used. The scan functions manage these controls.
When scanning is complete, the user clicks Finished. If logging is enabled, the data is written to
the log file or spreadsheet. The procedure can be repeated many times using the same
parameters, or the parameters can be changed as needed.

Always On Top Feature

When the Always on Top feature is enabled, the main window will stay in front of any other
windows that may be opened. This feature is especially useful when logging to Excel since the
logging function automatically launches the Microsoft Excel window. If ‘Always on Top’ is enabled,
the Excel window will open behind the main window.
Perform the following steps to enable the ‘Always on Top’ feature.
1 Close the main window.
2 Using Windows Explorer, navigate to the C:\SNC\PCE_1DS directory.
3 Right-click on the PCE_1DS.ini file and select Open With from the menu.
4 When the list of programs is displayed, select Notepad and then click OK.
5 When the Notepad window opens, look for the section of the ini file that begins with
[ElectrometerForm].
6 If the AlwaysOnTop parameter already exists, change the value from =0 to =1. If it does not
currently exist, add AlwaysOnTop=1 to the [ElectrometerForm] section of the ini file.
7 Launch the software program again. The ‘Always On Top’ feature is now enabled.

7 Software Interface
Introduction

Note: These instructions are for the 1D SCANNER software, version 1.2.3. For
instructions to use the SNC Dosimetry software with the 1D SCANNER, see the SNC
Dosimetry Reference Guide or Online Help.

The 1D SCANNER software allows the user to adjust the position and speed of the detector holder
from the control room. It also allows the user to log data as the scanning arm moves. Use of the
1D SCANNER software is optional when the device is used with a third-party electrometer,
The 1D SCANNER uses the same software as the Sun Nuclear PC Electrometer. The software
automatically detects the attached device(s) and displays the applicable screen options.

Note: If using the 1D SCANNER with a Sun Nuclear PC Electrometer, the software will
display settings for both devices. This manual describes the settings that are displayed
when only 1D SCANNER is connected. For detailed PC Electrometer software
information, refer to the documentation that is provided with the PC Electrometer.

Main Screen

The main 1D SCANNER software screen has the following elements:

• Help button—displays Help menu options.
• Data Logging—allows the user to automatically record 1D SCANNER time and position to a
text file or Excel spreadsheet. If a PC Electrometer is connected, the log also records current.
• Water Tank—positioning and speed options for the 1D SCANNER
• Date/Time
• Status Bar

Data Logging
The data logging feature allows the user to capture 1D SCANNER and/or PC Electrometer readings
to an Excel spreadsheet or a text file.
• If the 1D SCANNER is used with a third-party electrometer, the data log will only capture 1D
SCANNER time (in milliseconds) and position (Figure 7-4).
• If the 1D SCANNER is used with a Sun Nuclear PC Electrometer, the data log will capture 1D
SCANNER time (in seconds) and position as well as current for each electrometer channel,
and time/pressure readings (Figure 7-5).
Note: Data is logged every 20 ms with a 1D SCANNER attached or every 500 ms with
both a 1D SCANNER and PC Electrometer attached, except in the case of the Scan
Functions which log at 100 ms.

Click the Data Logging button to display the data logging options (Figure 7-4):
• None—data logging turned off.
• Text—data is logged to a text file that you name in the box below the setting.
• Excel—data is logged to an Excel spreadsheet.

Water Tank Software Controls

The water tank control options are: Current Position, Target Position, and Speed.
• Current Position - Displays the current position. This cannot be modified from the software.
• Target Position - The home position is the 0.00 cm position that is established during
calibration. Enter the distance from the home position in cm (the field accepts negative or
positive values), then click Move or press <Enter> to move the scanning arm to the target
position.
• Speed - The speed at which the scanning arm moves. The range is 0.01 to 2.00 cm/s. The
default is 2.00 cm/s. A slower speed will increase the resolution and produce a better
ionization curve.

Date/Time
The Date/Time control lets the user change the format of the date and time (obtained from the
PC’s system clock) to agree with national standards.
Clicking on the ‘Date’ side of the Date/Time button displays two date format options:
• M/D/Y
• D/M/Y
Clicking on the ‘Time’ side of the Date/Time button displays four time format options:
• HH:MM a/p
• HH:MM
• HH:MM:SS a/p
• HH:MM:SS
The selected date and time format options are also displayed in the logged data.

Status Bar
The status bar displays the status of the device. When the software is launched, the start up
routine searches for the attached 1D SCANNER and then displays a green check mark and the
status “Ready”.

USB Drivers - Troubleshooting

The USB drivers for PDI 2.0 are copied to the hard drive automatically during software installation,
but they are not installed until the software is launched. The 1D SCANNER must be powered on
when software is launched.
If the USB drivers do not automatically install at software launch, the 1D SCANNER will not be
recognized and software will not start. To correct this, try installing the USB drivers manually.
• If this computer was previously used with the original PDI and an older Sun Nuclear
Corporation instrument, replace the existing USB drivers with new USB drivers. See
“Replacing Old USB Drivers” in the Power Data Interface (PDI 2.0) Bulletin that is included with
the PDI 2.0. To request a copy of this bulletin, see “Contacting Customer Support” on
page 58.
• If this computer was not previously used with another Sun Nuclear Corporation instrument,
see “Installing PDI 2.0 USB Drivers Manually” in the Power Data Interface (PDI 2.0) Bulletin
that is included with the PDI 2.0. To request a copy of this bulletin, see “Contacting Customer
Support” on page 58.

Verifying Installation of USB Drivers

• See “Verifying Installation of PDI 2.0 USB Drivers” in the Power Data Interface (PDI 2.0)
Bulletin that is included with the PDI 2.0. To request a copy of this bulletin, see “Contacting
Customer Support” on page 58.

1D SCANNER – Verifying Motor Control

1 Attach the scanning arm to the water tank such that the detector holder movement can be
visually verified with the vertical ruler.
2 Note where the top edge of the detector holder lines up with the vertical ruler. This is the
starting position.
Note: If the increment to be verified is small (less than 1 cm) it may be difficult to verify
the movement visually on the vertical ruler. Repeat the increment multiple times until
it is visually verifiable.

3 Press an increment button and then press the directional arrow as many times as needed to
result in a visually verifiable distance.
• For example, to verify a 1 mm increment, press the .1 cm button and then press the
appropriate directional arrow at least 10 times for a total movement of 1 cm. Then, verify
on the vertical ruler that the top edge of the detector holder has moved 1 cm from the
starting position.
