Four games of nines were played last Sunday with no real upsets involved. Lou Kelly and Rob Doyle fought out three games with Lou winning the first Nine easily by 10-4. However, Rob made a big come back to win the second game 9-6. Lou proved a bit too strong, winning the last game 10-5. In another game, Col Pfingst proved too good for visitor Greg MacNamara, winning 14-5 and 105. Tex Hayward had a fairly easy win against Ron Robinson who never really got going, going down 135 and 9-5. The score card seems to be missing for the other game but I do know that the first game was a tie after nine ends with Gumby Chapman winning the extra end, and winning the next game defeating young Mitchell Pfingst who played really well. In Pairs 08 this week, we see J. and D. Carter against R. Black and R. Blucher. Sets of nine ends, M. McKellar versus J. Turner, with D. Holden as spotter, C. Pfingst versus Woody, spotted by J. Bowyer and T. Hayward v M. Chapman, with R. Doyle as spotter. Be there for the start of the games at 8.30am.

Blackall awarded 2010 National Campdraft Championships

The long-held dream of the Blackall Campdraft Association and President Roger Ellison to hold the National Campdraft Championships has been realised. The Associations third application in as many years has been successful. The 2010 championships are to be held in Blackall. As Roger said you cant get much better than the nationals, adding that everybody felt privileged to have them granted. Association Secretary Kellie Harlow emphasised that although their group is small, it is made up of very dedicated people. Everybody in the club is stoked, she said. The Association knew it was in with a good chance, along with the other contender, Cunningham. The Australian Campdraft Association came out to assess the facilities at Blackall, the number of cattle, camping facilities and to meet the group behind the application. The decision to give Blackall the championships was made in Roma at the end of January and the group was informed straight away. The championships are likely to be held over three to four days in April next year where final ribbons will be presented on Sunday night. Around 1600 first round nominations are expected and this will require over 2500 head of cattle. Tony Davidson at Champion, with the Russell Pastoral Company has made cattle available. Peel Pastoral Company and Jason and Ann Sprague will contribute if the numbers are needed. Prior to the championships, a new D will be built to cater for the influx in numbers. The championships will be bigger and harder with the number of people, cattle and horses that are involved, Kellie said. However, it appears that everybody is really looking forward to the challenge. Campdrafting is a competitive but friendly and family orientated sport, Kellie said, which results in a great atmosphere over the weekend. We have been really lucky with our sponsors and support from the Council. The thing about campdrafting is that you can go from the penthouse to the shithouse, depending on the cow you choose, Roger added, summing up the challenge the sport presents. Sixth annual draft coming up While the preparations for the national championships are now underway, the sixth Blackall Campdraft is on the 3rd-5th of April, with around 800 first-round nominations expected over two and half days. The showgrounds look ready for the action following a busy working bee on the weekend, with the grandstands and bar sitting on higher ground, to provide better views of the course. President Roger Ellison admires the view from the newly positioned grandstand Kings, Peter Avery, Tony and Diane Hauff, Matt Ganes, Regina Fitzsimons, Stewart Benson and Beau Frame helped out on the day. Roger said Stewart Benson is a great contributor, donating much of his time to the preparation of the grounds. The grounds look perfect every time Stewart does them, he said. The WORK Camp crew is also invaluable to the preparations, enabling committee members to be working elsewhere.

Acclaimed as the most coveted trophy in central on the calendar between the two towns 160 west golfing circles, the Ashes is set to be fiercely people played last year, over the two weekends, contested by Blackall and Tambo golfing teams he said. According to legend, a cigarette butt tossed from a bus full of Tambo and Blackall golfers heading to Isisford for a competition lodged in the trailer of gear hitched to the back of the bus. It caught fire and everything burnt the trophy is all that remained from the bonfire. Blackall and Tambo golfers now commemorate the event with an annual twoperson Ambrose played over two weekends. The first tussle will take place in Tambo on February 14 with the return bout scheduled for the Blackall golf course a fortnight later, on February 28. Blackall club president Anthony Allom said his players were ready for a full-on assault by Tambo, who were desperate to get their hands on the trophy. With the weekly p u b l i c a t i o n of the Barcoo Independent, my news is scarce this week. However I would like to take this opportunity to remind all householders about the Blackall-Tambo Regional Councils Community Views Survey. By now everyone should have received their copy to fill in and to send back by the 11th of February, using the reply paid address which can be found on the top right hand corner of the covering wrap. Of course you can drop your response into the Blackall or Tambo branch offices. We look forward to receiving your input for this all-important corporate plan which will take the Blackall-Tambo Regional Council forward into the future with effective and quality outcomes for all. Please have your say! Jan Ross

Ronan impressed with statue progress

Last month, Ronan Robinson drove to Melbourne from Blackall with his mother Gillian, father Shane and sister Rochelle, to visit the studio where his school essay has resulted in a larger-than-life-size statue of Lieutenant Edgar Thomas Towner. Blackalls Towner Project Committee will erect the 190 centimetre tall statue of Towner, who won a Victoria Cross for bravery, in time for Anzac Day. The family spent two weeks in Melbourne, visiting the Australian War Memorial, the Melbourne jail and attending a number of media events. Sculptor William Eicholtz began work on the clay sculpture of Towner in December. After being cast in bronze, Ronans father Shane is planning to bring the statue to Blackall where its sandstone base will be fitted. Impressed by the work that had been put into the

statue in the weeks leading up to his visit, Ronan thought the statue was brilliant. The visit also enabled Ronan to see Eicholtz working on the statue, and all the tools that were involved, some of which were handmade. Ronan was given a piece of clay from the work to bring home with him. Content to focus on Towners bravery rather than on his own extraordinary efforts in creating the memorial, Ronan has received commendations from around Australia. He was even sent a 1919 cigarette card bearing a young Edgar Towner from a man in South Australia.

At night the venue will be an entertainment showcase, and during the day, schools, young people and community groups will gather as the venue transforms into a workshop and educational forum. It will be in Blackall for three days from November 18-20, but before that, representatives from Q150 will be in Blackall, on March 2, to conduct auditions with locals who would like to become part of the Sheds entertainment. People wishing to express their interest in the auditions, presented

by the Bank of Queensland, must submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) form by 5pm on Thursday, February 19. Artist FAQs and EOI forms can be downloaded from http://www.q150.qld.gov. au/CelebrationHighlights/ q150Shed.aspx which also lists the address to send forms, along with support materials such as an artist biography, performance DVD, music CD, photographic documentation, and an activity proposal. Interested people can also speak with council Economic Development Officer, Louise Campbell on 4657 4222.

100 years ago in Blackall (1909)

One hundred years ago, the town area of Blackall was controlled by the Blackall Town Council, and the country area by the Kargoolnah Shire Council. The minutes of the two councils give some insight into events in both town and country, at that time. Blackall Town Council received a petition from thirtytwo ratepayers, requesting that Blackall Municipal Council (taken between 1896 and 1903): nominations be Richard Dawes (left), Town Clerk, came to Blackall in 1896. called annually for the appointment The Blackall Municipal Council became the Blackall Town of Council officers, Council in March 1903. and that the office of followed the Barcoo river from its Valuer be separate from that of junction with the Alice River, to Town Clerk. the five mile water hole. Cyberspace has not sucked the Blackall and Tambo council websites into thin air - council staff have shut both down. Blackall-Tambo IT officer, Jason Karsten said the information on the sites, developed for Blackall and Tambo Shire Councils, which havent been in existence since March 2008, was too out of date. We were getting too many complaints so we decided to take them off air, he said. A message should come up redirecting people to the Blackall-Tambo site, which will tell users that the new site is under construction. Options for the new website will be presented to council next week and Jason expects it to be developed about a month after a decision is made. Readers wishing to access the Barcoo Independent via the site will have to wait until then to do so.

1959 was a busy year for council, with the construction of infrastructure and the provision of services. Considerable infrastructure was put in place or approved during the year, which included the following works. The construction of new council chambers where the first meeting of council was held on September 23 1959. Council had agreed to build a students hostel, called tenders for its construction, and a tender of 47,995 was accepted. The new aerodrome runway, taxiway and parking area were completed. Work on the showground, which had opened last year, proceeded. Treasury approved a loan of 996 for the construction of four pensioner homes. Council resolved to construct a bore at the show ground, estimated to cost 18,600. In the area of health, Council had constructed a doctors residence/ surgery, and had advertised for a doctor to move in to it, however no applications were forthcoming. Notification was received of the resignation of the long-serving MoH, Dr. Harbison. Arrangements were underway for the Salk immunization campaign. Once again, goats were a problem, entering yards and eating plants. An arial baiting campaign, using strychnine, was to commence. 198 dingoes had been destroyed in the year. The establishment of a pasturage research station, on Chippendale reserve, was put to the Minister for Lands, and later rejected. Council protested against the removal of the State Electorate of Barcoo. A report to council on the successful Back to Blackall Week was received. Council agreed to the holding of cattle sales in the new rodeo yards at the showground. Extracts from the minutes of the Blackall Town council and the Kargoolnah Shire council in 1909 - Fred Rich

Is wool stencil an omen for new council name?

A beautifully restored brass wool stencil spotted at the Blackall Woolscour on Australia Day has reignited the debate over the name of the BlackallTambo Regional Council. Bearing the words Kargoolnah Shire Council, the stencil caught the eye of Blackall-Tambo Regional Council mayor Jan Ross, who said she was in favour of council adopting this as its new name. This stencil reminds us of the strong association with the name that our two areas have, Cr Ross said. When local government began in rural areas of Queensland in 1879, Kargoolnah was the name given to the division that included Blackall and Tambo. The history of the division and subsequent councils has been documented by Fred Rich in his book, Kargoolnah: Early Local Government of the Upper Barcoo. According to this, the first meeting of the Kargoolnah Divisional Board took place at the Northampton Downs homestead, now the Gillespie homestead, in April 1880. Twenty-three years later, in 1903, the board, minus the township of Blackall and the area around Tambo, which had formed their own governing bodies, became the Kargoolnah Shire Council. This name remained in existence until 1932 when it and the Blackall Town Council came together to form the Blackall Shire Council. The current council, which took on the name Blackall-Tambo when council amalgamations took place in March last year, has surveyed residents of both districts about a possible change of name. Councillors believed there needed to be acceptance of and certainty in a name before keeping it permanently. Results from the September 2008 survey showed 93 people saying they were not in favour of a name change and 60 saying that they were in favour. Comments from people against a name change indicated some thought it would be a waste of money. Some councillors believed one of the obstacles to a larger yes return was the lack of a clear choice of name. Of the 43 suggestions put forward, which included ideas such as Allbo, Woolley Bear and Big Sky, the two most popular names were Upper Barcoo and Kargoolnah, attracting seven and six ticks each. The next most popular name was Blackall Regional Council, with four ticks, and Blackall Shire Council was recommended by two people. Cr Ross said a name with Barcoo in it would not be looked on favourably by the government, because the name was already in use at the Barcoo Shire Council, but she thought Kargoolnah was a name that both communities could relate to. This is from our very beginning it was once our name, she said. We want something that will unite us and I think this could do it. Not only would it be a new beginning, but its also unique theres nothing else out there named Kargoolnah. Cr Ross said this was important in positioning the regional council in the public eye. Council is due to debate the issue of its name once again at its February 11 meeting, after putting the matter on hold to follow the progress of Dalby and Roma Regional Council attempts to have their names changed.

Lorelei Kiernan has taken over from the long-serving Kerry Lloyd as secretary of the Barcoo Pastoral Society. As the person who put into action many of the local show societys decisions, Kerry spent five years in the position. Society president Judy Atkinson described her organisational skills as amazing, and said she had an incredible ability to remain calm despite dealing with many different sections and all their requirements. I hope you can enjoy the show from outside the secretarys box, she told Kerry. Judy told members gathered for the Societys annual general meeting that while the decision to move to a one-day show had posed concerns about fitting all activities in, the efficiency of the head stewards brought this about well. This included a record number of nominations for the Stockmans Challenge, run by Rod and Lisa Kings. Another event that drew a large crowd was the fashion parade managed by Sarah Pearson. Judy thanked the other new stewards that came forward Ben

and Oona Banks, Amanda Schulze, Liz Harvey and Sally Cripps for their assistance, along with the experienced helpers. She said it had been decided to rest the yard dog section this year and thanked Rex Johnson and Mick Rigby for their dedication to the section over the years. No beef cattle section will take place either, owing to the Beef 2009 Expo in Rockhampton. However, it is full steam ahead for horses, stud and flock merinos, the pavilion, poultry and caged birds, wool, the wether trial, a triathlon, prime lambs, and the commercial heifer trial. Lisa Goodman is also busy planning a Rural Young Males and Alcohol event and hoping to bring the paintball combat game, Skirmish out for the May 3 show. Judy was reelected president at the AGM, along with patron Dinah Evans and treasurer Lesley Heatley. Neither of the vice president positions have been filled.

Gday everybody. Welcome back! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday. I know I did. I spent the last 7 weeks catching up with my large wandering family, travelling from one end of the state to the other. Thats the problem with a nomadic lifestyle; families tend to spread themselves far and wide, so it can make it difficult for a family get together. I see from the holiday pictures some of you are sending in, that many of you went away, visiting relatives over Christmas. It looks like many of you went to the beach, I cant say I enjoy the beach very much. I dont like the feeling of sand between my claws and up under my feathers it gets very itchy and takes forever to get rid of. If you have a holiday snap at home and would like to share it with your friends at Kids Corner email it to Eddie Emu at barcooindependent@gmail.com and I will put

KIDS CORNER with Eddie Emu

them in next weeks issue. Thats right next weeks issue!! Kids Corner will be every week from now on, that means twice as much fun, double the jokes, two times as many competitions. So instead of having to wait two weeks for your dose of Kids Corner you now only have to wait one. Im excited, but I need your help so please send: 1. Pictures of you and your pet for Pet Pal 2. Jokes 3. Recipes for Cooking Cuisine 4. Your poems 5. Your birthday date for Birthday Wishes 6. New for 2009 - if your sporting group is having a special day like an open day or carnival let me know and than I can put it in the paper. The more people know the more successful your event will be. Until next week, I will sign off with a good old fashioned Australian Goodbye. Hooroo.

Blackall pool headlines spa book

The hot pool that forms part of the Blackall Aquatic Centre features in a new book on Australias geothermal baths and natural springs. Titled Australias Great Thermal Way, the book was written by grey nomad Steve Lambert, who is an enthusiastic believer in the therapeutic properties of artesian water. Steve became a devotee of the hot water that bubbles up from Australias Great Artesian Basin in 2006, when he tried out the facilities at Innot Hot Springs near Ravenshoe on the Atherton Tablelands. I found the experience of soaking in the pools so beneficial to myself we eventually stayed two months, Steve said. From being full of aches and pains on a continuous basis to how I feel today is quite remarkable. After the full time soaking initially, I find that I only require a top up occasionally to keep me pain free. Because Steve and his wife Jenni are always on the move, having travelled around Australia for over 30 years, he began to keep a list of where else similar pools could be found, so he could keep up with his bathing. It was a bit hit and miss, Steve said. No-one really knew. The seed for the book was planted in his mind as a result. In May last year he and Jenni were in Whyalla, SA planning their trip north. Enquiries at the local library and information centre showed there was still little data on Australias hot springs available, so the pair began to compile information themselves. By the time we reached Blackall it was time to purchase a computer and commence drafting the words into book form, said Steve. It features 44 thermal pools in every state, including one at Hastings in Tasmania. From the open air pond with poly pipe trickling water in at Mungeranie Roadhouse on the Birdsville Track to the upmarket Peppers Springs Retreat and Spa just over an hour from Melbourne, and taking in Eulos night time mud baths along the way, the book provides a comprehensive reference guide. Steve said his main goal in publishing was to get the message out to as many people as possible about the benefits of mineralised water, and then help people to plan trips to access as many as possible. During our 30 years on the road we had driven past so many but were not aware that they existed, he said. In addition to the facility guide, Steve has included general information for travellers setting up a vehicle for towing, caravan park courtesies, checking ahead for weather conditions, even a few recipes to throw together in a motorhome kitchen. He and Jenni are currently marketing their book in preparation for the winter rush north by fellow nomads. Copies are available at the local caravan park. Steve said he was especially grateful to the people of Blackall for their assistance and featured the towns Aquatic Centre on the front cover of the book. We have lived and worked in the bush most of our lives because of the friendly people, but Blackall seems to have an abundance of them, he said. Some of the travellers staying at the caravan park for winter were very helpful and willing to give advice too.
