REFLECTION – “SALAT”
In This documentary REEL TIME- Salat, i became emotional. As i watched this
documentary, I'm thinking that i am beyond grateful that i didn't experience situation like
that but I'm sad because of what i saw.
When there is insufficient nutrition, an individual suffers from undernutrition. The main
factor that contributes to undernutrition revealed on the episode of GMA's Reel Time:
"Salat" is poverty. Vina, a widowed mother of eight children in Tondo, makes a living by
peeling garlic cloves and paid only 40 pesos. With low income, they could only rely on
much cheaper and unhealthy foods like instant noodles, which is not enough to satiate
their hunger.

In the first 20 minutes of the video, I slightly cry when the kid in the interview says that
she doesn't want to be in that place since the place is chaotic and she has nothing to do
with it. She will choose to go to school rather than stay in that place to observe and
practice. It makes me sad since the children are accustomed to not being fed twice a
day since their mother can't afford to buy food for them.

If the child eats infrequently and, if possible, only similar types of food, how will this child
get the other nutrients his/her body requires to grow? Just looking at Vina's physical
condition makes me feel terrible and sad. Another factor that was not mentioned in the
show but that I believe has a significant impact on malnutrition is the living environment
and unsanitary conditions. These people live in an unhealthy environment and lack
proper hygiene due to a lack of funds to purchase soap and shampoo. As a result of
these factors in undernutrition, children experience weight loss, growth stalling, low
immunity to diseases, and slow growth.

Always be grateful for what you have in life, even if it is small. Don't complain about
what you don't have; instead, appreciate what you do have.
