3 RADIO TEACHER: A pleasant day to everyone especially to our dear students!

4 You are tuning in to Radyo Aralan sa Naga -Season 3.

5 A Naga City Division on-the-air class for Grade 10 students.

6 We are glad to have you for another episode

7 of learning Mathematics today.

8 I am Ma’am Rowena L. Rosales,

9 your Grade 10 Mathematics Teacher

10 From Camarines Sur National High School.

11 BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3 SECS AND FADE UNDER

12 RADIO TEACHER: Before we start, look for a good place

13 where you can clearly listen to our broadcast.

14 Stay alert and focus on our discussion

15 for you to understand today’s lesson. Are you ready? Let’s start!

16 Our objectives for today's lesson are the following:

17 First, derive the distance formula,

1
1 RADIO TEACHER: Second, apply the distance formula

2 in solving word problems.

3 And third, show accuracy in solving problems

4 using the distance formula

5 BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3 SECS AND FADE UNDER

6 RADIO TEACHER: Before I proceed to our discussion,

7 Let me first show to you the map of Camarines Sur.

8 Camarines Sur is a province located in the central part of Bicol Peninsula

9 It is located between 140 10’ and 130 15’ North Latitude

10 And between 1240 10’ and 1220 40’ East Longitude.

11 Camarines Sur is the largest among the six provinces of Bicol Region.

12 Can you still recall the unusual phenomenon that happened last year

13 which affects the province of Camarines Sur including its nearby City?

14 What have you experienced last October 14, 2021 at 10:08PM?

15 You’re right! There was a 4.3 magnitude earthquake

16 With the epicenter located at Canaman, Camarines Sur.

17 The earthquake started on October 14 and continues for several days,

18 which is known as the Earthquake Swarms.

19 Some of you used the google map to know the epicenter of the earthquake

20 To check the distance of the epicenter to your current location.

21 Here’s the map of Camarines Sur which can be used

22 to find the distance between two places.

23 BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3 SECS AND FADE UNDER

24 RADIO TEACHER: Say for example, if you are living in Tinambac,

25 Using a vehicle, the driving distance between Canaman and Tinambac

26 is about 57.5 km given the route shown in the map.

2
1 RADIO TEACHER: What if you have to solve this problem?

2 The epicenter of the earthquake is located at Canaman, Camarines Sur.

3 If you live in Tinambac, 20km North and 15km East of the epicenter,

4 What is the distance of your house from the epicenter of the earthquake?

5 BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3 SECS AND FADE UNDER

6 RADIO TEACHER: Before answering this problem,

7 Let me first discuss to you our topic today

8 which is all about the Distance between two points.

9 In finding the distance between any two points,

10 you can use the distance formula

11 which is derived from Pythagorean theorem.

12 Do you still remember this theorem?

13 I know that you have it in your mind.

14 And you’re correct!

15 BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3 SECS AND FADE UNDER

16 RADIO TEACHER: Pythagorean theorem states that in a right triangle,

17 the square of the length of the hypotenuse

18 is equal to the sum of the squares of the lengths of the two legs.

19 In equation, you have c2 = a2 + b2.

20 where a and b are the legs, and c is the hypotenuse

21 BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3 SECS AND FADE UNDER

22 RADIO TEACHER: Say for instance, in this coordinate plane, we have the x and y axes

23 What is the length of the vertical line segment AB?

24 Points A and B lie on the second quadrant of the coordinate plane.

25 Point A has coordinates (2, 5) and Point B has coordinates (2,1)

26 To find the length of line segment AB,

3
1 RADIO TEACHER: you can just count the number of units from point A to point B.

2 Or you can find the absolute value of the difference between y1 and y2

3 In this example, y1 = 5 and y2 = 1,

4 The absolute value of the difference between 5 and 1 is 4.

5 Thus, the length of line segment AB is 4 units.

6 BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3 SECS AND FADE UNDER

7 RADIO TEACHER: If point B has coordinates (2,1)

8 And point C has coordinates (5,1)

9 Can you find the length of the horizontal line segment BC?

10 Good job my dear students!

11 Your answer is correct.

12 To find the length of segment BC,

13 You can find the absolute value of the difference between x1 and x2.

14 BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3 SECS AND FADE UNDER

15 RADIO TEACHER: The value of x1 is equal to 2 and x2 is equal to 5.

16 The absolute value of 2 minus 5 is equal to 3.

17 Thus, the length of line segment BC is 3 units

18 How about the length of line segment AC?

19 If you will analyze the figure,

20 Line segments AB, BC and AC formed a right triangle ABC.

21 Thus, you can apply the Pythagorean theorem

22 to find the length of line segment AC.

23 BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3 SECS AND FADE UNDER

24 RADIO TEACHER: Since the length of line segment AB is 4 units

25 And line segment BC has a length of 3 units.

26 To find line segment AC, you can use the formula c2 = a2 + b2

4
1 RADIO TEACHER: or c = √ a2 +b2 , where c is the unknown segment AC.

2 Thus, Segment AC = √( AB)2 +( BC )2

3 Line segment AC is the hypotenuse of right triangle ABC

4 And line segments AB and BC are the two legs.

5 BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3 SECS AND FADE UNDER

6 RADIO TEACHER: Hence, the length of segment AC is equal to the √ 4 2 +3 2

7 Simplify, you have √ 16+9

8 It becomes √ 25 which is equal to 5.

9 Thus, the length of segment AC is 5 units.

10 Using the theorem, you can derive the distance formula.

11 In the example, segment AC is equal to √ ( BC)2 +(AB )2

12 Using the coordinates of the given points (x1, y1) and (x2, y2)

13 The distance between point A and Point C can be computed

13 using the formula, d = √ ( x 1−x 2)2 +( y 1 − y 2)2

14 or d = √( x 2−x 1)2 +( y 2 − y 1)2

15 where d is the distance between the two given points,

16 x1 and x2 are the x-coordinates

17 and y1 and y2 are the y-coordinates of the two given points.

18 BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3 SECS AND FADE UNDER

19 RADIO TEACHER: Let’s have some examples.

20 Find the distance between the two given points,

21 Point M (9, 8) and Point A (1, 2)

22 In this example, x1 = 9, x2 = 1, and y1 = 8 and y2 = 2.

23 If you substitute the values in the formula,

23 d= √( x −x ) +( y − y )
1 2
2
1 2
2
, you will have d = √ ( 9−1)2 +(8−2)2

5
1 RADIO TEACHER: Simplify, you have d = √ (8)2 +(6)2

2 It becomes d = √ 64+36 which is equal to √ 100

3 √ 100 is equal to 10
4 Thus, the distance between point M and Point A is 10 units.

5 BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3 SECS AND FADE UNDER

6 RADIO TEACHER: Another example, find the distance between R (- 2, 3) and D (4, - 1).

7 Let x1 = - 2, x2 = 4, and y1 = 3 and y2 = - 1.

8 If you substitute the values in the formula,

9 d = √( x 2−x 1)2 +( y 2 − y 1)2

10 RADIO TEACHER: d = √( 4−(−2))2 +(−1−3)2

11 d= √(6)2 +(−4)2
12 d= √ 36+ 16 which is √ 52

13 Simplify it further, √ 4 (13)

14 Thus, the distance between points R and D is 2 √ 13 units.

15 Let’s have another example.

16 BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3 SECS AND FADE UNDER

17 RADIO TEACHER: Find the distance between point F (−¿ 3, 5) and point B (−¿ 5, 2)

18 In this example, x1 = −¿3, x2 = −¿ 5, and y1 = 5 and y2 = 2.

19 If you substitute the values in the formula,

20 d= √(x −x ) +( y − y )
1 2
2
1 2
2

21 d = √(−3−(−5 ) )2 +(5−2)2

22 Simplify, you have d = √ (−3+ 5)2 +(5−2)2

23 Simplify it further, you will have d = √ 22 +3 2

24 It becomes d = √ 4 +9 which is √ 13

25 Thus, the distance between point F and Point B is √ 13 units.

6
1 BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3 SECS AND FADE UNDER

2 RADIO TEACHER: Let us now answer the problem posted in the beginning of our lesson.

3 The epicenter of the earthquake is located at Canaman, Camarines Sur.

4 If you live in Tinambac, 20km North and 15km East of the epicenter,

5 What is the actual distance

6 (not the driving distance based from the passable routes)

7 of your house from the epicenter of the earthquake?

8 BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3 SECS AND FADE UNDER

9 RADIO TEACHER: Based on the illustration,

10 the coordinates of the epicenter is at the origin (0, 0)

11 RADIO TEACHER: And the location of Tinambac has coordinates (15, 20)

11 here, x1 = 0 and x2 = 15 and y1 = 0 and y2 = 20.

12 substitute the values in the formula,

13 d = √( x 2−x 1)2 +( y 2 − y 1)2

14 d = √(15−0)2 +(20−0)2

15 Simplify, you have d equals √ (15)2 +(20)2

16 It becomes, √ 225+400

17 Simplify it further, you have √ 625 which is equal to 25

18 Thus, the distance between your house in Tinambac

19 and the epicenter of the earthquake is about 25 km.

20 BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3 SECS AND FADE UNDER

21 RADIO TEACHER: Is everything clear to you? Are you still on the track?

22 Do you still enjoy listening and learning?

23 If your answer is Yes. That’s awesome.

24 Now that you have already know and understand our topic

25 on Distance between two points using the distance formula.

7
1 RADIO TEACHER: Let us have a simple assessment.

2 Get your ballpen and paper.

3 And answer this assessment.

4 BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3 SECS AND FADE UNDER

5 RADIO TEACHER: Write True if the statement is correct and False if it is incorrect.

6 1. Points with the same x-coordinate form a vertical line.

7 True or False?

8 The answer is True.

9 2. The distance between any two points also refers to

10 the length of the line segment with these points as endpoints.

11 True or False?

12 The answer is True.

13 3. The distance between any two points can be a negative real number.

14 True or False

15 The answer is False.

16 4. In a right triangle, the square of the length of the hypotenuse is equal

17 to the sum of the squares of the lengths of the legs.

18 True or False

19 The answer is True.

20 BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3 SECS AND FADE UNDER

21 RADIO TEACHER: What is the distance between the points:

22 (4, 5) and (2, 5)

23 A. 2 units B. 3 units C. 4 units D. 5 units (PAUSE)

24 The correct answer is letter A. 2 units.

25 Since the two points form a horizontal line segment,

26 You can just find the absolute value of the difference between 4 and 2.

8
1 RADIO TEACHER: Very good! You got the correct answer.

2 Next problem: What is the distance between the two given points:

3 (7, −¿3) and (2, 1)

4 A. √ 13 units B. √ 21 units C. √ 41 units D. √ 4 3 units(PAUSE)

5 You’re right! The distance is √ 41 units, Letter C.

6 Given the points (7, −¿ 3) and (2, 1), here x1 = 7, x2 = 2

7 And y1 = −¿3 and y2 = 1

8 Using the distance formula, d = √ ( x 1−x 2)2 +( y 1 − y 2)2

9 You will have d = √(7−2)2 +(−3−1)2

10 Simplify, it becomes d = √ 52 +(−4)2

11 Then, d equals √ 25+16 which is equal to √ 41

12 Thus, the distance is √ 41 units

13 BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3 SECS AND FADE UNDER

14 RADIO TEACHER: How do you find solving problems

15 involving the distance between two points?

16 Which part is easy?

17 And which part is difficult?

18 Let us reflect on this:

19 Today, communicating with loved ones at a distance is so easy.

20 In what ways do you express your love and concern for your loved ones?

21 Even if we have a long-distance relationship with our loved ones,

22 At present, modern technology made our distance closer to each other.

23 Thank you for listening!

24 I hope you have learned something from our discussion

25 and you will be able to answer your activity sheets and tests accurately.
