Simple Past Tense

Function :

Past Simple tense has different uses:

1. We use past simple to refer to events that took place in the past. Example:

*A pharmacist called Jhon Pemberton invented Coca –Cola.

2. We frequently use a time adverb to situate the event in finished past time. Example:

* Rolls Royce went bust in 1973

* A few years ago, the City Plaza hotel was a leader in its segment of the market.

* Many people lost a lot Money on the Stock Exchange during the 1990s.

3. We use the past simple in annual reports to describe the company´s performance over the last
year. Example:

4. Last year was a good year for our group

5. The action that happened at some specific time in past.

6. Two or more consecutive action that happened in the past.

7. The finished action of the past.

8. To talk about the people who are no more in this world.

9. Time or date expressions.

KALIMAT AKTIF

Example:

1. Tomy watched the movie yesterday

2. Tamara visited Bali Island last month

(-) S + to be ( did) + not + V1 + O

Example :

1. Tomy didn’t watch the movie yesterday


2. Tamara didn’t visit bali island last month

(?) To be (did) + S + V1 + O

Example:

1. Did tomy watch the movie yesterday?


2. Did tamara visit bali island last month

KALIMAT PASIF
(+) S + ( was/were) + V3

Example:

1. The movie was watched by Tomy yesterday

2. Bali island was visited by Tamara last month.

(-) S + (was/were) + not + V3

Example :

1. The movie wasn’t watched by Tomy yesterday


2. Bali island wasn’t visited by Tamara last month

(?) (was/were) + S + V3 + ?

Example :

1. Was the movie watched by tomy yesterday?


2. Was bali island visited by Tamara last month

Verbal simple past

(-)S+Did+not+V1

(?)Did+S+V1

pada simple past tense, kata kerja kedua (V2) hanya digunakan pada kalimat positif. Jika bentuk
kalimatnya negatif dan pertanyaan, maka akan kembali ke kata kerja dasar pertama dengan
menambahkan did sebelum kata kerja.

Example :

•My mom and I went to the zoo yesterday 

•I played football last week

Nominal Simple past

(-)S+to be (was/were)+Not+Adj/adv

(?)to be (was/were)+S+Adj/adv

Was digunakan untuk subjek I, She, He, It

Were digunakan untuk subjek You, They, We

Example:

•I was here last night


•We were late yesterday
