Definition Of Simple Past Tense


Simple past tense is a sentence used to tell the events that happened in the past and
finished or ended in the past as well. So, the past tense is used when you tell in the present
about past activities.
Simple Past Tense Formulas
In general, The Simple past tense formula is subject + verb 2 + object + complement.
There are two forms of sentences that automatically cause differences in formulas. That is,
there are verbal sentences and nominal sentences.
Characteristics Of Simple Past Tense
1. In the simple past tense, the verb used is always the 2nd form to describe the activity
that occurred in the past, or use To Be was/were.
2. Using past tense time signals like last night, yesterday, etc.
3. Good command of written and spoken English.
Simple Past Tense Formulas
1. Nominal Simple Past Tense
Simple past tense in the form of a nominal sentence is a simple past tense sentence that
does not contain a verb (non verbal). In forming Simple past tense sentences (nominal), do
not use the verb (verb), but use to be. To be is used for "was"and " were". This Tense is only
to express events that happened in the past.
Nominal Sentence Formula
( + ) Subject + being (was / was) + complement
(- ) Subject +Be (was / was) + not + complement
(?) Being (was/was) + subject + complement
Examples :
( + ) I was an honorary teacher last month
( - ) I was not an honorary teacher last month
( ? ) Was I an honorary teacher last month ?

( + ) He was a mechanic last year


( - ) He wasn't a mechanic last year
( ? ) Was he a mechanic last year ?
2. Verbal simple past tense

Simple past tense in the form of a verbal sentence is a simple past tense sentence that
contains a verb (verbal). The verb (verb) used in forming Simple Past tense sentences (verbal) is the
verb of the second form (verb 2). After "verb 2" may be accompanied by an object or adverb
(adverb).

(+) Subject + verb 2 + complement
(-) Subject + did + not + verb 1
(?) Did + subject + verb 1
Examples :

( + ) Ari went to Sabang yesterday


( - ) Ari didn’t go to Sabang yesterday
( ? ) Did Ari go to Sabang yesterday ?

( + ) I watered the flowers last week


( - ) I didn’t water the flowers last week
( ? ) Did i water the flower last week ?

( + ) He worked in Nindya Karya Company last month


( - ) He did not work in Nindya Karya Company last month
( ? ) Did he work in Nindya Karya Company last month ?

( + ) Me and my sister visited our grandparents last July


( - ) Me and my sister didn’t visit our grandparents last July
( ? ) Did me and my sister visit our grandparents last July ?

( + ) She walked to school yesterday


( - ) She did not walk to school yesterday
( ? ) Did she walk to school yesterday ?

( + ) I cooked rice in the kitchen last morning
