SIMPLE PAST TENSE
It is used to talk about an event that
happened in the past or an event that has
already happened.
The characteristics of the simple past tense:
using a description of the time that has occurred or in the past such as
01 yesterday, ago, last week, last month, last year, last night, last two days,
and others
Sentences in the simple past tense are marked with verb 2, (verb2)
which is divided into two types, namely regular verbs and irregular
02 verbs.
To be used are "was" and "were"

To be (was) the subjects are I, he, she, it

To be (were) the subjects are you, they, we


The simple past tense sentence pattern is divided into 2 formulas,
verbal and nominal.

Verbal
(+) subject+verb 2+object
(-) subject+did+not+verb 1
(?) Did+subject+verb 1

Example :
(+) Alexa bought bakpia in Jogja yesterday.
(-) Alexa didn’t take part in the Helloween festival this year.
(?) Did you go to school yesterday?

Verb 2 is only used in positive sentences. If the sentence is negative and


interrogative, it will return to the first basic verb by adding did before the verb
Nominal
(+) Subject + to be (was / were) + adjective/ adverb
(-) Subject + was / were + not+ adjective/adverb
(?) To be (was / were) + Subject + adjective/adverb

Example :
(+) You were a naughty boy.
(-) She wasn’t late yesterday.
(?) Was she late yesterday?
