1. DEFINITION
subjunctive is a special, relatively rare verb form that expresses something unreal
situation or imagined. Subjunctive is conditional sentence that used to express
something that expected but doesn’t match to reality or fact or unreal situation. The
words used in the subjunctive include: wish, as if, as though, if only and would rather.
We use the subjunctive mainly when talking about events that are not certain to happen.

2. FUNCTION
• As if/ as though
To state a situation that not fact.
• Wish/ would rather/ if only.
To express wishes that a person hopes to happen.

3. TYPE OF SUBJUNCTIVE SENTENCE

a) PRESENT SUBJUNCTIVE
• Wish:
Subject (1) + wish + Subject (2) + Verb 2 / were
Example: I wish I could help you (in fact, I can’t help you)

• As if /As though

Subject (1) + Verb 1 + as if/ as though + Subject (2) + Verb2 / were

Example: Nadline look at me as though I were a stranger ( in fact I’m not a stranger)

• Would rather

Subject (1) + would rather + Subject (2) + Verb 2 / were

Example: I would rather he said the truth (he doesn’t say the truth)

• If only

If only + Subject + Verb 2

Example: if only she were here (she is not here)


b) PAST PRESENT

• Wish

Subject (1) + wish + Subject (2) + Had + Verb 3

Example: I wish I had found the key yesterday (I’m not find the key)

• As if /As though

Subject (1) + Verb 2 + as if + S + Had + Verb 3

Example: she sang as if she had been a singer (she was not a singer)

• Would rather

Would rather + S + had + V3

Example: I would rather my parents had lived in this country (my mom didn’t live in this
country)

• If only

If only + Subject + Had + Verb 3

Example: if only my brother had not been sick last night (my brother was sick last night)

c) FUTURE SUBJUNCTIVE

• Wish

Subject(1) + wish + Subject(2) + could/would + Verb 1

Example: I wish you would come to my birthday party (she would not come to the party)

• It is

Subject(1) + It is + Subject(2) + Could / Would + Verb 1

Example: it’s raining, she wishes it would stop ( it’s still raining now and hasn’t stopped)
