PART I

PRELIMINARY

1.1 Rear

English is the international language. With master English well, then we will be able to
communicate with other nations in the world. In sampingitu, we will be able to add insight and
our knowledge for the advancement bangsadan our country, because we will be able to read
literature in English, listen to radio broadcasts abroad, as well as watching movies, add
wawasanilmu knowledge of the other. Thus, in the end we can master the knowledge-knowledge
at all bidang.Tenses is important in language education inggris.Dan also a rule in the English
language. If someone wants to master English well, then he should be able to master the tenses
well. Among the forms of other tenses, in this paper we describe the simple past tense.

2.1.Rumus Simple Past Tense, Function Example Sentences

A. Understanding Simple Past Tense

Simple past tense is the tense that serves to show the work that occurred in the past without
wanting to emphasize that the work has (perfect) or moderate (continuous) done. Understanding
of this tense is almost the same as the Simple Present Tense, only time's different and often used
in conversation or in writing.

B. Formula Simple Past Tense.

Because the formula is simple (simple), then the formula is simple. We just need the Verb-2 as a
formula absolute traits past tense. So the basic formula of the verbal sentence is: S + Verb-2. As
for the nominal sentence, then we must make "to be" her into a verb-2, that "was and were".

C. Functions Simple Past Tense

1. Shows the work happened in the past without wanting to emphasize the work is happening or
has happened. If you are confused by the difference with the present perfect tense because both
have occurred, please read the difference

Example:

o I knocked on your door last night but no one Came out. (I'm knocking on your door last night,
but no one was coming out)

o Did you tell her that I was with my friend last weekend another girl? (Do you tell her when I'm
with my boyfriend last weekend another?)

2. Used in Conditional Sentence type 2.

Example:

o I would invite you to go along with me if the car was not full at that time. (I'm going to ask you
to go along if the car was not full time)

o If you did not cheat me, I would be nice to you. (If you do not lie to me, I'll be good to you).

3. Being interrupters sentence against an ongoing work in the past (past continuous tense).

Example:

o She Came into the class when the teacher was teaching.

(He entered the classroom when the teacher was teaching).

o Last night I almost got an accident since a cat crossed in front of my car when I was driving
my car.

(Last night I almost crash because of a cat passing in front of me when I drove my car Sendan)

4. To explain the work that happened in the past after another incident completion (sequential or
chronological). The first incident usually use the past perfect tense.

Example:
o I had already gone out from that building before the bomb blew up.

(I have been out before the bomb went off)

o She had finished her job before I Came.

(He had already completed his work before I came)

D. Description

Simple past tense using time information showing the past, like yesterday (yesterday), last
week (last week), last night (last night), one year ago (a year ago), the day before (the day
before), the once upon a time (at a time).

E. Example Sentences Simple Past Tense.

1. My mother cooked fried chicken for my birthday party last week.

(My mother was cooking fried chicken for the event ultahku weeks ago).

2. I tried to call you yesterday, but no one picked up my phone.

(I tried to reach you yesterday, but nobody raised telphon).

3. Jokowi won the president election Several months ago.

(Jokowi won the president election a few years ago).

4. My smartphone was the fastest loading Among others.

5. She did not go to school yesterday Because since three days ago she has been sick.

(He did not go to school yesterday because since three days ago she was ill.

2.2.Rumus Past Tense Continuous Function Example Sentences

A. Understanding the Past Continuous Tense

Past continuous tense is also known as progressive past tense. This tense is used to describe a job
or activity that is happening in the past. Is said to be continuous or progressive because the work
is being done. And say past because it happened in the past.

B. The formula Past Continuous Tense.

The formulation of this tense is composed of two elements, namely the past and continuous. The
characteristics of the past he always uses Verb-2 while continuous always used to be + Verb-ing.
When combined, the second form (verb-2) than to be is was and were thus the basic formula is
the past continuous: S + was / were + Verb-ing.

C. Functions Past Continuous Tense

1. Shows the work was going on in the past.

Example:

o I am sorry Jane, yesterday I could not help you Because I was washing my car.

(Sorry Jane, I can not help yesterday, because I again nyuci my car).

o She was crying in my shoulder so I could not go any where.

(She cried on my shoulder so I could not go anywhere)

2. Demonstrate two activities that are going on together in the past.

Example:

o The fire was burning my house when my mother was cooking last night.

(My father was in the shower when my mama was cooking last night)

o John was operating his computer when I was watching a movie.

(John was operating the computer when I'm watching a movie)

3. Serves to indicate that activity is happening in the past when other events intervened.

Example:

o My father was taking a bath when I knocked the door

(Ayaku was in the shower when I knocked on the door)

o She always interrupted me when I was delivering my speech.

(He always interrupted when I was making a speech)


D. The use Description Time

Description of time spent together with the past tense, which contains last + time + or time ago.

In the function number 2 and 3, there is always a word while or when that means when / at the
time. We may use one of them and may be exchanged, just that it would be appropriate if the
activities are conducted simultaneously using a while, and if one uses when interrupting
operations.

E. Example Sentences Past Continuous.

1. I was there when you was delivering your speech on the stage.

(I was there when you are delivered a speech on the stage).

2. Julie was cooking in the kitchen while I was watching a television yesterday morning.

(Julie was cooking in the kitchen when I was watching TV yesterday morning).

3. Was Thidarat climbing the peak of Rinjani mountain when I was sleeping in my growing niche
last week ?.

(Whether Thidarat were climbing the peak of Mount Rinjani when I was sleeping in the tent?).

4. The heavy rain was pouring when I arrived at home this morning.

(Moderate rain was falling when I got home this morning).

5. I am sorry I did not know that you knocked at my door yesterday Because I was listening to
the music.

(Sorry, I did not hear you knock on the door yesterday because I was listening to music).

6. She was reading a book while the library was closed.

(She was reading a book when the library is closed).

7. That building was being built last year when I passed last year, but now it's already broken
down.

(The building was under construction when I passed last year but now torn down).

8. Are you the one who called when I was walking around with my girl friend in the mall
yesterday?
(If you're the one that I call my time again the same way my girlfriend at the mall yesterday?).

9. Were you dancing with my girl friend when I went to the toilet?

(If you're dancing with my boyfriend when I go to the toilet).

10. The music was playing when I left that bar last night.

(The music was still playing when I left the bar last night).
