GRAMMAR
WISH (MONG ƯỚC, ƯỚC AO)
1. Present wish
 S + wish(es) + (that) + S + V2/-ed + O
= IF ONLY + S+ V2/-ed + O
 Động từ BE được sử dụng ở dạng giải định cách (past sujunctive form), tức là ta
chia BE = WERE với tất cả các chủ ngữ. (I, You, He, She, It, We, They)
Expresses (bày tỏ) regret about a present situation.
Eg:
 I wish I were rich. (I am poor now. / I am not rich.)
 I wish I could play soccer. (The fact is that I can’t play soccer.)
 If only she were here. (The fact is that she isn’t here).
 We wish (that) we didn’t have to go to school today. (The fact is that we have
to go to school today).
 Tom wishes (that) he had a big house. ( He does not have a big house, and he
wants to). (Tom ước anh ấy có một ngôi nhà to.)
 I wish ( that ) I knew her address. ( but I don’t know her address.)
(Tôi ước rằng tôi không phải làm việc hôm nay.)
 She wishes she were a rich person (Cô ấy ước cô ấy là người giàu có.)
 I wish (that) I could speak Spanish (but, unfortunately, I can’t speak
Spanish). (Tôi ước tôi có thể nói tiếng Tây Ban Nha.)
 I wish (that) we could go to the party tonight. (unfortunately, we’re busy so we
can’t go). (Tôi ước chúng ta có thể tham dự buổi tiệc tối nay.)
2. Past wish
S + wish(es) + (that) + S + had + PP + O
= If only + (that) + S + had + PP + O
Expresses regret about a past situation.
Eg:
 I wish that I had studied harder at school. (I didn’t study hard at school, and
now I’m sorry about it).(Tôi ước rằng tôi đã học hành chăm chỉ hơn ở trường học.)
 She wishes that she had had enough to buy the house. (But She didn’t have
enough money to buy it.)
 If only that the train had been on time. (But unfortunately the train was late, and
so I missed my interview). (Tôi ước đoàn tàu đã đến đúng giờ.)
 I wish he had come to the party. (In fact: He didn’t come to the party.) (Tôi ước
anh ấy đã đến bữa tiệc.)
 I didn’t meet her yesterday.
I wish _____________________________________________.
 He failed his exam last week.
He wishes __________________________________________. 
 Danny didn’t finish her homework last night.
Danny wishes _____________________________________.
3. Future wish
S + wish(es) + (that) + S + would / could + V (without to)
If only + (that) + S + would / could + V (without to)
Wish can be used to express a wish for something to happen or something good
in the future. (Wish có thể được dùng để thể hiện mong ước một việc nào đó xảy ra
hoặc một điều gì đó tốt đẹp dưới tương lai.)
Eg:
 I wish you wouldn’t leave your clothes all over the floor.
 I wish I would be an astronaut in the future.
 If only I would take the trip with you next day.
 If only I would be able to attend your wedding next day.
 I wish that John weren’t busy tomorrow. (he is busy tomorrow).
(Tôi ước John không bận vào ngày mai.)
 She wishes we could attend her wedding next week.
(Cô ấy ước chúng tôi có thể tham dự lễ cưới của cô ấy tuần sau.)

Note:
Chúng ta có thể sử dụng  wish + would để nói về một điều ta không thích, cảm
thấy khó chịu và mong muốn ai đó hoặc điều đó thay đổi trong tương lai. Cấu trúc
này không dùng với bản thân và những điều không thể thay đổi (trừ thời tiết).
Eg:
I wish that the neighbours would be quiet! (They are not quiet and I don’t like the
noise.)
(Tôi ước hàng xóm của mình có thể yên tĩnh một chút!)
 I wish that you wouldn’t smoke so much! (You do smoke a lot and I don’t like
it. I want you to change this.)
(Tôi ước anh đừng có hút thuốc nhiều như vậy!)
 I wish that it would stop raining!
(Tôi ước trời đừng có mưa nữa!)
 I wish they would stop arguing.
 He always goes to school late.
I wish ________________________________________.
