Expressing Wish

Wish is used to indicate something that did not happen or will not happen or will not happen and it is
used when the speaker wants reality to be different, to be exactly the opposite.

Wish is more used to show regret.

Examples:

1. I wish I had a million dollars so I can buy that book.


2. I wish I had brought an umbrella.

Possible wish

1. S + wish + somebody + something


ex: They wish him a happy birthday.
2. S + wish + S + v1
Ex: I wish I can see her today.
3. Wish + Noun
Ex: Wish me luck on my National Exam

Impossible wish

1. S + wish + Simple Past Tense


Ex: I wish I could play the guitar (Reality: I can’t play the guitar)
2. S + wish + past perfect tense
Ex: I wish I had finished my homework (Reality: I didn’t finish my homework)
3. S + wish + would (not) + V1
Ex: I wish they would not play the music so loudly. (reality: They play their music so loudly)
