Simple Past Tense

Usage
• Actions that started and finished in the past

Examples:
1. I went to the beach last Sunday.
Did you go to the beach last Sunday?
2. She played her harmonica two days ago.
She did not/ didn’t play her harmonica two days ago. (-)
Did she play her harmonica two days ago?
Kinds of Sentences
There are two kinds of sentences in Simple
Past Tense.
They are:
1. Verbal Sentence
2. Nominal Sentence
Verbal Sentence
• (+) S + Verb2 + Object + Complement
• (-) S + did + not + Verb1 + Object + Complement
• (?) Did + S + Verb1 + Object +Complement

Examples:
(+) I went to Jakarta yesterday.
(-) I did not go to Jakarta yesterday.
(?) did you go to Jakarta yesterday?
Amanda drank a glass of milk. (+)
Amanda did not/ didn’t drink a glass of milk. (-)
Did Amanda drink a glass of milk? (?)

They washed their clothes two days ago. (+)


They did not wash their clothes two days ago. (-)
Did they wash their clothes two days ago? (?)

Nominal Sentence
• (+) S + was/were + complement (adjective/ noun/ adverb)
• (-) S + was/were + not + complement (adjective/ noun/ adverb)
• (?) was/were + S + complement (adjective/ noun/ adverb)?

Examples:
(+) She was slim
(-) She was not slim
(?) Was she slim?
Was (I, she, he, it)
Were (We, They, You)

I was slim. (adjective) (+)


I was not slim. (-)
Were you slim? (?)

They were at school. (adverb of place) (+)


They were not at school. (-)
Were they at school? (?)

It was a pen. (noun) (+) They were pens.


It was not a pen.(-) were they pens?
Was it a pen? (?) they weren’t pens.
