Synopsis Of Episode 3
Knowledge for All

The wisdom of the Upanishad is available for all. It transcends all narrow man-made
divisions. The only criterion for gaining this knowledge is the earnest wish to
know and the sincere will to transform.

The journey of a savage to a sage through the knowledge of 'oneness of all' is

presented through the transformation of Ratnakar - the dacoit into Sage Valmiki who
composed the impeccable epic Ramayana. The turning point was Ratnakar's meeting
with Sage Narada, who was established in this experience of "The Self in me is the
Self in all", due to which he was not only fearless, but also was friendly towards
all. The imparting of knowledge by the sage to this dacoit is the story of this
episode.

Fast Forward: Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely. Knowledge is

power, and it has to be used for showing the way, and not to show off and feel
proud. This is beautifully presented in the next episode.

Synopsis Of Episode 4
Purpose of Knowledge

Knowledge is power. Hence knowledge is meant for the benefit of the totality. If
knowledge becomes a means to fatten ones ego, and if knowledge is used as a sword
of destruction, the very purpose of knowledge is lost. Beware for such wrongly
wielded knowledge that destroys the very wielder.

The purpose of knowledge is presented through the story of young Ashtavakra, and
Bandi - the scholar in King Janaka's court. On repeated asking, when Ashtavakra
hears from his mother Sujata that his father - Rishi Kaahod was once defeated by
Bandi in Janaka's court, and had to give up his life to fulfil the condition laid
down by Bandi, Ashtavakra resolves to educate Bandi and other scholars in Janaka's
court on the purpose of knowledge.

When Bandi is defeated and when he rises to end his life, Ashtavakra forgives him,
and declares that the scriptures are not weapons to establish one's superiority,
but are to be used for welfare of humanity.

Fast Forward: We get introduced to Vedas and its Universality and beauty in the
next two episodes.

Synopsis Of Episode 8
[????? ??? ?????? ??? ???? ??? ??]

Upaveda

Medicine, fine arts, Economics and science of warfare these are thefour Upavedas
or subsidiary Vedas. Some consider Architecture as fourth upaveda instead of
Economics. These are related to the prosperity and completeness of the nation.

For this, the story of Devayani and Kacha has been chosen. After being defeated by
the demons (asuras), the denizens of heaven (devatas) led by Indra approached their
preceptor Brihaspati. The divine Guru opined that it was the asuras' mastery over
the science of warfare that they won, and that devatas were poor in the study and
knowledge of the Upavedas. Brihaspati informs that the Guru of asuras -
Shukracharya has even mastered Sanjeevani Vidya (the science of bringing a dead
person back to life), and this knowledge must be gained by the devatas. But only
the one who can win the heart of Shukracharyas daughter - Devayani would succeed
in this endeavour. Kacha comes forward for this.

Kacha succeeds in winning over the heart of Devayani in a very short time. The
asuras, being jealous, conspire and kill Kacha, and mix the ashes of his body with
a drink and offer to Shukracharya. When Devayani learns that Kacha has landed up in
Shukracharyas stomach, she insists that he is brought back to life. But that would
mean the death of Shukracharya. So Shukracharya is left with no choice but to teach
the Sanjeevani Vidya to Kacha, and then bring him back to life, so that he can come
out and bring Shukracharya back to life.

Fast Forward: Vedanta outlines four goals of human life - Dharma, Artha, Kaama and
Moksha. All four are taken up separately in the following episodes. The very next
episode deals with Dharma or righteousness, and is beautifully portrayed through a
very popular story.

The Human Goal Kaama

Kaama or pleasure is third among the four human pursuits. If one enjoys the
pleasures of life staying within the limits of Dharma/righteousness, one's mind
remains pure and one is able to progress in life. Unrighteous indulgence is not
only dangerous, but may lead to complete destruction.

The interesting story of King Bhartrihari carries this message very clearly. In
order to awaken the indulgent king, a brahmin comes and offers him a special fruit,
which would bestow eternal youth to the person who would eat it. The king gives
this fruit to the queen, who in turn gives it to her lover - the gate keeper. The
gate-keeper passes the fruit to a servant maid, who in turn passes this special
fruit to her paramour - the chief of army. The army-chief gives it to his lover,
who comes and offers the fruit to the king. Then what happened....? Wait and watch.

Fast Forward: The fourth pursuit that is ultimate liberation is portrayed in the
next episode.

was so proud of his wealth and possessions that he used to think he could even buy
respect and goodwill with his money. Even charity was done by him with lot of ego.

Student Life

The four ashramas or stages of life are meant for the attainment of the four
purusharthas or human goals mentioned in the previous four episodes. The first
stage of life is brahmacharya or studenthood. This is characterised by simple
living and dedication to service and acquiring knowledge.

The story of Satyakama, the son of Jabala has been chosen to carry this concept.
Satyakama had an intense desire to study the scriptures but nobody in town was
ready to accept him as a disciple. One day, when he sees Sage Gautama on the banks
of river Ganga, he falls at his feet and pleads for knowledge. When Gautama
inquires about his father and lineage, he runs to his mother to find out. Jabala,
his mother, truthful as she was, informs him that she is unaware of who his father
was, as she had a relationship with many men. She asked him to inform Gautama
Rishi that he is the son of Jabala, so he was Satyakama Jaabaala. Satyakama does
so without any hesitation. Impressed by the commitment to truth, Sage Gautama
accepts Satyakama as his disciple in spite of all odds.

Fast Forward: The next episode shall depict a beautiful picture of the second stage
- a householder's life.

Married Life

The second of the four ashramas or stages of life is the household life or the
Grihastha ashrama. Grihastha ashrama forms the foundation of society. To care for
the family, to extend the ambit of ones family beyond the walls of ones home, to
serve the society, to care for others all these form the very challenge as well
as the beauty of this stage of life.

For this, the interesting story of the famous poet Maagha and his wife Vidyavati
has been chosen. The great poet Maagha used to give away in charity everything he
received as gifts. Once, a brahmin approached him for help to conduct his
daughter's wedding. Maagha sold items from his home and sent the money to the
father. All arrangements were made, but for golden ornaments; so the compassionate
Maagha took the golden bangle off his sleeping wife Vidyavati's wrist and sent it
to the brahmin. In the morning, when Vidyavati awoke, she took off the second
bangle, and giving it to Maagha, said, "We should not bid farewell to our daughter
with a single bangle."

Retired Life

The third of the four ashramas or stages of life is the Vanaprastha or the life of
retirement. An inner maturity wherein one gives way for the next generation to take
up the reins of life in their hands, to facilitate the life of the younger
generation by gently advising them whenever required without unduly imposing
oneself, to turn within, and start living a life dedicated to spiritual pursuits
that calm ones mind characterises the Vanaprastha ashrama.

For this, two stories have been chosen - the stories of Dhritarashtra and
Bimbisara.

Even after losing everything in the Mahabharata war, King Dhritarashtra is not
ready to give up the pleasures of his position and the palaces. As a result he gets
repeatedly insulted by Bhima's scornful behaviour. Finally, advised by Vidura and
Gandhari, Dhritarashtra agrees to leave the palace and enter Vanaprastha ashrama.

The story of Bimbisara and his son Ajatashatru is a similar one. Due to Bimbisara's
not retiring from his kingship at the right time, his son Ajatashatru arrests him
and takes over the kingdom. Bimbisara dies in the prison! Giving up one's own
possessions is difficult. It is only Vanaprastha ashrama that gives an opportunity
to consider that the whole world is one's family.

stage of life - Sannyasa ashrama.

Renunciation 1

The last of the four ashramas or stages of life is the Sannyasa ashrama. It is the
stage of life dedicated totally to the spiritual pursuit. This stage is
characterised by the total giving up of self-centered life, and dedicating oneself
for the welfare of the society.

The inspiring story of Vidyaranya, who was instrumental in establishing the

Vijayanagar empire, is chosen to depict this. Vidyaranya had entered Vanaprastha
ashram after fulfilling his household duties. One day, brothers Harihara Raya and
Bukka Raya meet him and he learns that they were captives with King Tuglak and
escaped at the first available opportunity. Now they wish to free their motherland
Vijaynagar from the rule of Tuglak. Vidyaranya commits himself to the service of
the Nation, and as a Sannyasi spends his life in the welfare of the society.

Renunciation 2
The concept of Sannyasa that was dealt with in the earlier episode is further
elaborated in this episode. What prompts a person to take to a life of total
spirituality? What is his/her higher calling that prompts him to voluntarily
renounce? What is expected from such a person? All these ideas are taken up in this
episode.

Rishi Yajnavalkya won many scriptural arguments in the court of Janaka and other
courts and also earned a lot of wealth and accolades. But all this while he kept
having one question - Is winning over others greatness? His mind would not find
peace without answers to questions like - What is true Bliss? He finds that people
never missed an opportunity to establish one's supremacy over others in any field -
be it caste, status, fame, wealth or knowledge. He concludes that it is wanting of
joy/bliss that keeps pushing man into such actions. Hence real victory lies in
freeing oneself from all bondages of sorrow and to contemplate on the Self which is
of the nature of Supreme Bliss.

Fast Forward: The next episode throws light on the Varna Vyavastha which is loosely
translated as 'Caste System'.

[????? ??? ?????? ??? ???? ??? ??]
The Universal Characterization

The ancient varna system of Brahmana, Ksatyriya, Vaishya and Sudra.its

misinterpretation, consequent wrong application which lead to the downfall of the
Indian society in recent times is discussed. That the varna system is not based on
birth but on guna and karma the inherent propensity of a person and the work-
tendency of an individual is brought out in this episode.

When Chanakya corronated Chandragupta as the king of Magadh, many opposed this as
Chandragupta was not a Kshatriya (warrior/leader) but a Shudra (of low caste) by
birth. Chanakya challenged all those people and re-iterated the truth declared in
the Vedas that no scripture or culture supports the classification of society based
on birth. It is purely based on the work-tendency and the natural propensities of
any individual, and so Chandragupta is a Kshatriya by his natural inclination and
therefore the most suitable leader.

Fast Forward: The next episode shall depict the sixteen sanskaaras of human life.

samskaaras or purifications in the Vedic culture. What are these samskaaras? What
are the deeper significances of these rituals? How do they remind us of the
purpose of our very birth and how at every step they inform and educate us of the
spiritual evolution of the individual soul?. All this is brought out in this
episode through music, dance and drama.

The episode begins with a couple offering oblations in a sacrifice. The first
samskaara called 'Garbhaadhaanam' was being performed, in which a prayer for a
pure soul to enter the womb is offered to the Lord. Further, through the various
incidents of Lord Shri Krishna's childhood or the life of Baba Soordas, the
various samskaaras have been depicted.

Fast Forward: The next episode talks about few more samskaaras with Soordas' story
till the advent of his Guru.

The sixteen milestones of life - 2

The story of Baba Soordas continues: Once when Baba Soordas was talking to his dear
Kanhaai (Lord Krishna), King Akbar came there along with Tansen. Soordas sung a few
songs for the King and Tansen, and later Soordas requested Tansen to sing a song in
the praise of Lord Shri Krishna, which he did. King Akbar had come to take Soordas
along to his court, but Baba Soordas would follow only Lord Shri Krishna. So, after
Akbar returned, Soordas continued conversing with his dear Kanhaai. Talking about
the tenth samskaara, Soordas remembered that his Upanayanam samskara (thread
ceremony) was not performed at all, and the reason was that he was blind since
birth. Once he walked away with a group of people singing songs and begging for
alms, but to his disappointment these people too abandoned him. Now he himself
started singing songs, and people used to give him something to eat. Some
compassionate person got a small hut made on the banks of river Yamuna where he
started living. One day someone paid him a visit...and his life changed forever.

Fast Forward: In the next episode the study of Soordas begins with Vidyarambham
samskara.

Glory of Human Birth

An animal remains an animal and is bound by its instincts. Conscious self-evolution
is possible only in human birth. It is only human beings who can break the shackles
of body and mind and soar high. How to make the best of this rare human life? These
ideas are dealt with in this episode through the story of Saint poet Tulsidas.

Tulsidas' early life was filled with struggle. His mother passed away soon after
birth and his father, considering him inauspicious, gave him away to a beggar named
Parvati amma. When he was seven years of age, Parvati amma too passed away. This
made everyone around him look at him with contempt, and drove him away from a
distance. Fortunately he was married to Ratnavali. Once when his wife went to visit
her parents for a night, Tulsidas, unable to bear the separation, reached
Ratnavali's parents' home. Disgusted by this lust, Ratnavali scornfully told him,
"If you had such love for Lord Rama, you would have attained Him now." This changed
his life, and Tulsidas went to Ayodhya and decided to translate Ramayana written by
Sage Valmiki into the local dialect. Due to much opposition from the learned
scholars of Ayodhya, he returned to Kashi (Benaras) and composed Shri
Ramcharitamanas, which show-cased an ideal Indian society to awaken the people from
their slumber of ignorance and selfishness.

Fast Forward: The next episode presents the qualifications of a fit student of
Vedanta through a beautiful story from the Upanishad.

Adhikari - The Seeker of Knowledge

Success in any sphere requires certain abilities. Even to come to experience the
Self, it is necessary for one to have certain qualities such as, the ability to
discriminate between the Real and unreal, to control the mind, to have mastery over
the senses as well as the compelling desire to know the Self. In this episode
there are discussions on these themes depicted through the incidents from lives of
Vitashoka and Nachiketa.

Vitashoka, the brother of Emperor Ashoka is of the opinion that the charity given
to Buddhist monks is used by them to indulge in pleasures of the world. As a result
of a conspiracy by some ministers against Vitashoka, King Ashoka orders his
execution. Prior to the execution, King Ashoka grants Vitashoka six days to indulge
in various pleasures. It is in the face of death that it dawns upon Vitashoka that
one who is constantly aware of his imminent death can never really get carried away
by pleasures. This was a unique method adopted by King Ashoka to get Vitashoka to
understand and realise the Truth.

On the other hand, Nachiketa, having been sent to Yama, the Lord of death, gains
the knowledge of the Self. Vaajashravas, Nachiketa's father, having performed the
Vishvajit sacrifice to overcome attachment, was seen to be selecting and
distributing in charity the most aged and frail cows. Nachiketa wondered why his
father was doing this and he was told that this was being done for his sake. It
then dawned on Nachiketa that his father was not yet free from attachment and for
this attachment to end, his father needed to give up his attachment for his son
Nachiketa. He then went and asked his father who his father is giving Nachiketa to?
Agitated by this question and the repeated questioning, Vaajashravas replied in
anger, Go, I give you unto Death!.

Fast Forward: In the next episode we shall see how the entire Universe can be our
Guru / Teacher.

Anatman, the not-Self

Starting from this episode, our philosophical quest takes us to much deeper and a
more intense level. Knowledge of the Self (Atman) is the supreme and the purest
form of knowledge. Before knowing what we are, it is important to know what we are
not. To know the Self therefore, we must know what Self is not viz. Anatman. Body,
Mind and Intellect are not Self, these are Anatman.

At the beginning of this episode we find Abhimanyu has laid his life in the
battlefield, and Lord Krishna is explaining to Subhadra, Draupadi and Uttara that
what has died is the body; Abhimanyu can't die.

Stepping in at this stage of this play from the Great Indian Theatre, our Sutradhar
(compere) takes us to the story of Satyavan-Savitri where Savitri is following
Yamaraj who is taking her husband Satyavan after his death. During her discussions
with Yamaraj on the topics of gross, subtle and causal bodies, she smartly
establishes the importance of Anatman is able to make Yamaraj grant her a boon
which she uses to get Satyavan back to life.
