38
• List them down.

1. ______________________
2. ______________________
3. ______________________
4. ______________________
5. ______________________

3. Points to Remember:
Every story has basic components, and these are called story elements.
Some of the story elements are characters, setting, conflict, solution and
theme. These elements answer the basic questions: Who? What? When?
Where? Why? and How? By understanding each of these components, you
can analyze and appreciate the author’s work.

1. Characters

• The person/s, animal/s, and thing/s participating in the story

• Protagonist and antagonist are used to describe characters
• The protagonist is the main character of a story, the one with
whom the reader identifies. This person is not necessarily
“good”.
• The antagonist is the force in opposition of the protagonist;
this person may not be “bad” or “evil”, but he/she opposes
the protagonist in a significant way.

2. Setting

• This is where and when the story happens. It is the time and
place during which the story takes place. There are several
aspects of a story’s setting to consider when examining how
setting contributes to a story:

✓ place –Where is the action taking place?

(geographical location)
✓ time – When is the story taking place? (historical period,
time of day, year, etc.)
✓ weather condition – Is it rainy, sunny, stormy, etc.?

39
3. Problem or Conflict

Every story must have a conflict, a challenge or problem

around which the story is based. Without conflict, the story will have
no purpose.

4. Solution

The solution is the answer to the problem. It is also the

conclusion of the story. It is where any unanswered questions are
answered, or “loose ends are tied.” Most of the instances of solution
are presented in the final parts or chapters of a story.

5. Theme

This is the central idea, belief, lesson, or insight of the story. It is

the idea that the author is trying to make the reader understand.

Generalization

Developing a solid understanding of the elements of a story is essential for

the readers to follow and fully comprehend the stories they read. A story has
five basic but important elements. These are: the characters, the setting, the
problem, the solution, and the theme. These essential elements keep the story
run smoothly and allow the action to develop in a logical way that the reader
can follow.

1. Application

A. Read and answer the questions that follow.

Hotel for Dogs is a funny book written by Lois Duncan. It doesn’t start out
funny, though. Bruce and Andi’s family has just moved to a new town. Bruce is in
sixth grade, and Andi is in fourth. They are staying at their aunt’s house until their
parents find a new house. Bruce and Andi aren’t very happy about this because

41
their dog Bebe can’t stay at Aunt Alice’s house with them. Aunt Alice is allergic
to dogs.

On the first day at Aunt Alice’s house, their aunt introduces Bruce and
Andi to Jerry, who lives next door. Jerry is Bruce’s age, and he has a dog named
Red Rover. Later that day, Bruce and Andi see Jerry and Red Rover again, in
Jerry’s front yard. Jerry is pushing Red Rover to try to make him pull a wagon.
Bruce runs over to Jerry and tells him that Red Rover will not like him if he keeps
treating him that way, but Jerry tells Bruce to mind his own business. Jerry shoves
Andi out of the way and starts to leave. He calls Red Rover to come with him.
But Red Rover just moves over closer to Bruce.

Bruce and Andi miss Bebe. When Andi walks home from school each day,
she pretends that Bebe is walking along behind her. One rainy morning, Andi
sees a cute little white dog sitting on Aunt Alice’s porch to keep dry. She picks
up the little dog and pets it. She wishes she could keep it. When she comes
home from school that day and goes to her closet, there on the floor is the little
white dog. And three tiny puppies! Andi doesn’t know what to do. She knows
the dog can’t stay in Aunt Alice’s house. She is afraid if she tells Bruce he will tell
their parents, and then the dog and her puppies will have to go.

Finally Andi decides to tell Bruce, and he helps her keep the secret. They
find a house nearby with no one living in it and take the little dog and its
puppies there. They make a nice bed for the dogs, and every day they take
them food, and play with them. They are also careful to keep the house clean.
Then Red Rover runs away from Jerry and shows up at the house where Bruce
and Andi are keeping the little white dog and her puppies. They let Red Rover
stay there too. The house is becoming a regular dog hotel! Before long more
dogs are added, and Bruce and Andi let two friends in on the secret. The
addition of these two friends is a big help, but things just keep getting crazier
and crazier. To find out more about all that, you’ll have to read Hotel for Dogs.

pray the Holy Rosary every day for the world to attain peace, and we will be
delivered from dangers.” The rosary is ours, for protection and guidance.

48
Points to Remember
Words that take the place of nouns are called pronouns. We use
pronouns as substitutes for nouns to avoid repetition. The word or group
of words that shows who or what is referred to by a pronoun is called
antecedent of the pronoun.
Personal pronouns refer to specific people, places, things, or ideas.
Like nouns, pronouns are either singular or plural. They can be classified
according to gender: masculine, feminine, common, or neuter. They also
differ in case and person (1st, 2nd, or 3rd).
The subject pronouns are pronouns that are used as subjects of
sentences. The subject pronouns arranged according to number and
person are I, you, he, she, it we, you and they.
Pronouns that are used as object of verbs or object of preposition are
called objective pronouns. The object pronouns are me, you, him, her, it,
us, you, and them. These pronouns follow a verb or a preposition in the
sentence.
Possessive pronouns are words that take the place of noun
possessives. These pronouns show possession. Like the other types of
pronouns, possessive pronouns must also agree with their antecedents in
number and gender. The possessive pronouns are mine, yours, his, hers,
its, ours, yours, and theirs.
Compound personal pronoun is a pronoun which is formed by
adding suffix at the end of words such as ''self'' (for singular) or ''selves''
(for plural) to certain personal pronouns.
Compound personal pronouns are called as compounds because
they are made from a personal pronoun by adding the suffix. We can
divide compound personal pronouns into first person, second person and
third person.
First person: myself, ourselves
Second person: yourself, yourselves
Third person: himself, herself, itself, themselves

It is important for pronouns to match or agree with their antecedents

in person, number, and gender.
