CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

In recent years, we are in a battle where our enemy was invisible. COVID-19 pandemic became a
major concern of our country. Due to lack of health facilities, tools and equipments, health worker and
limited access to health services many people suffer from the impact of new situation and culture shock
they experienced.

Due to the threat brought by COVID-19 pandemic, people are unable to conduct face to face
meeting. Many filipinos have no access to their source of living and it becomes difficult for us to adjust
due to strict policies and protocol we must follow to ensure the safety of every individual.

This study elaborate the factors that influence people’s decision in taking COVID-19 vaccine.
Through this study, the participants was able to gather more information about the efficacy and benefits
of COVID-19 vaccine. Furthermore, the success of this study was helpful to change people’s perception
about COVID-19 vaccine, especially for those people who are still hesitant in taking COVID-19 vaccine.

COVID-19 Pandemic caused tremendous effects on people’s lives. Billions of people have been
infected and countless people has died. The most in high-risk are the older ones and children who were
identified as vulnerable to COVID-19. Some researchers of Pharmaceutical companies find ways to solve
this catastrophe and developed different vaccines urgently. Unfortunately, many people have doubts
about vaccine safety, and this is going to be a major challenge to be resolved by health care providers,
policymakers, community leaders, and governments to increase the widespread acceptance of the
vaccines. The doubts of people towards vaccines are due to the factors of their past experience,
influence of social environment, and the information they perceived.

December 2020, several vaccines were authorized to prevent COVID-19 infection, and more
than 50 COVID-19 vaccine candidates were being developed. Vaccination has now begun in several
countries around the world, but people still have doubts about the safety and efficacy of vaccines,
including the longevity of protection against COVID-19, as several cases of reinfection have been
reported. Moreover, the rapid development of vaccines casts doubt on safely.

Parents have become more disparaging towards their children vaccination. Different study show
reasons ehy parents are critical and hesitant in taking COVID-19 vaccine. These include anxiety about
side effects, lack of trust in herd immunity and the perception that vaccine-preventable disease are not
serious. This suggested that parents who refuse vaccination are concerned about long -term health
problems as a result of vaccination and have doubts about the safety of vaccines. However, these
factors vary between different groups of parents who refuse on COVID-19 vaccine. One of the groups
who is critical about National Immunization Program (NIP) and participate less compromises parents
with anthroposophical worldview.

As the world welcome the availability and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines many people were
‘hesitant’ in taking COVID-19 vaccines, due to the limited information and confusing source of
information regarding its efficacy. With this, the government builds up a public trust to assure that the
provided vaccines are not harmful and assure a successful vaccination program for people. A previous
study suggest that a more ‘localized’ public education and role-modeling from public officials and health
authorities was helpful in building public trust. However, lots of clarification was needed during its
application in previous situation where education is fully executed online. The problem lies on country’s
poor internet connectivity which greatly affects the online setup. In the same way, the idea of public
officials as role models seemed to be ineffective since there were already casualties linked to the
vaccine. A consistent transparent approach was suggested to prepare the for more defensive strategy to
fight the pandemic.
