A. WHAT IS PHILOSOPHY?

1. What is the etymology of the word “philosophy”?


- The original meaning of the word philosophy comes from the Greek roots philo-
meaning "love" and -sophos, or "wisdom." When someone studies philosophy they
want to understand how and why people do certain things and how to live a good
life.
2. What is the historical definition of philosophy?
- It is the study of general and fundamental questions, such as those about existence,
reason, knowledge, values, mind, and language.
3. What is the essential definition of Philosophy?
- The study of ideas about knowledge, truth, the nature and meaning of life, etc.
4. What is the technical or lexical definition of Philosophy?
- Technical - Philosophy (from Greek: φιλοσοφία, philosophia, 'love of wisdom') is the
study of general and fundamental questions, such as those about existence, reason,
knowledge, values, mind, and language.
5. In what way that philosophy is an attitude and activity of the mind?
- Philosophers have called such mental states “propositional attitudes” because they
seem in one way or another to involve some attitude that an agent—a human being,
an animal, or perhaps a machine—has to a thought or proposition, which again is
often taken to be the meaning of the sentential complement that expresses it.

- It helps you understand yourself better.
