Definite article the

Uses of “the”
 when we mention the object again : I met a man at the party. The man was from Spain.
 For specific object or objects that both the speaker and listener know: Can you pass me the salt, please?
 With singular noun that signifies entire species or groups The tiger is a wild animal.
 before unique people or things The sky , the Pope , the president ,the moon , the Earth
 Superlative of adjectives : the best , the most beautiful ,…..
 with adjectives like rich, poor, elderly and unemployed  to talk about groups of people
Life can be very hard for the poor. I think the rich should pay more taxes.
 before genitive: the barber’s shop
 countries whose names include words like kingdom, states or republic:

the United Kingdom the Kingdom of Bhutan the USA


 countries which have plural nouns as their names: the Netherlands , the Himalayas , the Alps
 before names of seas , oceans , rivers: the Black Sea , the Pacific Ocean , the Thames

Africa, New York
 single islands : Corfu , Bermuda
 parks , lakes, streets : Central Park , Lake Michigan , 42 nd Street
