A geometric sequence is a sequence where each term is found by multiplying the previous term by a constant value called the common ratio. The general term of a geometric sequence is an = a1rn-1, where a1 is the first term and r is the common ratio. A sequence is only considered a geometric sequence if it has a common ratio between each term. An example is provided to illustrate a geometric sequence with a common ratio of 3 and the rule to calculate any term in the sequence.

multiplying the previous term by term times a constant, non-zero
the same value. Its general term is; multiplier called the common

Geometric Sequence

10, 30, 90, ... 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, ...

This sequence has a factor of 3 This sequence has no common

between each number. ratio so it’s not a geometric
sequence, but it has a common
The values of a and r are: difference which is 2 so it’s a
arithmetic sequence.
 a = 10 (the first term)
 r = 3 (the "common ratio") d = a1 - a n / 1 - n

The Rule for any term is: d = 2 - 10 / 1 - 5 → -8 / -4 = 2

The 6th term is;
an = 10 × 3(n-1)
an = a1 + (n - 1)d
So, the 4th term is:
a6 = 2 + (6 - 1) 2 → 2 + 10
a4 = 10×3(4-1) → 10×33 → = 12
10×27 = 270
