LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

Mathematics 10 (Q1 – Lesson 3)
Illustrate Geometric Sequence and Differentiate
a Geometric Sequence from an Arithmetic Sequence

I. Introduction

In Science, bacteria are microscopic single cell organism that lives in

our body. Usually, they doubled every 20 minutes. Potentially, a single
bacterium can multiply over sixteen million in just eight hours.

This reproduction of bacteria is an example of Geometric Sequence.

Recall that in previous Learning Activity Sheet, you studied Arithmetic
Sequence and their applications. In this type of sequence, you will explore
more on sequence where there are more applications involving real life.
Detailed explanations on the examples were given for you to understand better
this type of sequence.

II. Learning Competency

Illustrates geometric sequence (M10AL-Id-1)
Differentiates a geometric sequence from an arithmetic sequence.

III. Objectives:

At the end of this Learning Activity Sheet, you are expected to:
1. Illustrate geometric sequence.
2. Determine the common ratio of geometric sequence.
3. Find the first nth term of geometric sequence.
4. Differentiate geometric sequence from an arithmetic sequence.

1
IV. Discussion

A geometric sequence or geometric progression is a sequence in

which each new term is obtained by multiplying the preceding term by a
constant number called common ratio r. The nth term of geometric
sequence is an = a1 r n-1

where, an = nth term; a1 = first term; n = number of terms

𝑎2 𝑎3 𝑎4 𝑎𝑛
r = common ratio = = = =𝑎
𝑎1 𝑎2 𝑎13 𝑛−1

Example 1. Illustrate the pattern of the following geometric sequences.

Geometric sequence Pattern

4, 8, 16, 32, … Multiplying 2 to get the next term
81, 27, 9, 3, …. Multiplying 1/3 to get the next term
2, -10, 50, -250, … Multiplying -5 to get the next term
-10, 5, -5/2, 5/4, … Multiplying -½ to get the next term
3, 1.5, 0.75, 0.375, … Multiplying 0.5 to get the next term

Example 2. Determine if the given sequence is geometric sequence or not. If

it is geometric sequence, find the common ratio and next three terms.
a) 2,6,18, 54, …
Solution: To determine if the sequence is geometric or not, there must
be a common ratio between any two terms in the sequence.
Thus, solving for r,
𝑎 𝑎 𝑎
r = 𝑎2 = 𝑎3 = 𝑎 4
1 2 13
6 18 54
r= = =
2 6 18

r=3 =3=3

Hence sequence 2,6,18, 54, …, is geometric sequence because it has a

common ratio r of 3. The next three term are:

a5 = a4 (r) = 54 (3) = 162

a6 = a5 (r) = 162(3) = 486

a7 = a6 (r) = 486 (3) = 1,458

Thus, the next three terms of the sequence are 162, 486 and 1,454.

b) 81, -27, 9, -3, …

Solution: To determine if the sequence is geometric or not, there

2
must be a common ratio between any two terms in the sequence. Thus,
solving for r,
𝑎 𝑎 𝑎 𝑎
r = 𝑎2 = 𝑎3 = 𝑎 4 = 𝑎 𝑛
1 2 13 𝑛−1
−27 9 −3 −1
r= =−27 = =
81 9 3

Hence sequence 81, -27, 9, -3, …, is geometric sequence

−1
because it has a common ratio r of . The next three term are:
3
−1
a5 = a4 (r) = -3 ( 3 ) = 1

−1 −1
a6 = a5 (r) = 1 ( ) =
3 3

−1 −1 1
a7 = a6 (r) = ( 3) =
3 9

−1 1
Therefore, the next three terms of the sequence are 1, and .
3 9

c) 4, 8, 12, 16, …
Solution: To determine if the sequence is geometric or not, there
must be a common ratio between any two terms in the sequence.
Thus, solving for r,
𝑎2 𝑎3 𝑎4
r= 𝑎1
= 𝑎2
= 𝑎13
8 12 16
r= = =
4 8 12

3 4
r =2 ≠ ≠
2 3

Since the given sequence has no common ratio then, it is not geometric
sequence. Instead the given sequence is arithmetic sequence because it has a
common difference of 4.

Example 3. Find the first three terms of geometric sequence defined

by an =2(3)n-1
Solution: Substitute the value of n into 1, 2, 3 respectively hence

Given an =2(3)n-1
1st term n=1 a1= 2 (3)1-1 =2 (3)0 = 2 (1) = 2
2nd term n=2 a2 =2 (3)2-1 =2 (3)1 = 2 (3) = 6
3rd term n=3 a3= 2 (3)3-1 =2 (3)2 = 2 (9) = 18
Therefore, the first three terms of the sequence an = 2(3)n-1 are 2, 6, and 18.

How to determine if the given sequence is arithmetic or geometric sequence?

3
Arithmetic vs Geometric Sequence

If the terms given in Sequence

Arithmetic a sequence have a common difference
Geometric (d),Sequence
then use
an = dn + a0
a = a + (n − 1) d
Where: n d 1is the common difference (number addedanto=get a1 the
r n-1next term)
where a1 isdthe = afirst
2-a1 term, d is term – first
(second where a1oris the first term, r is
term),
the common difference
= a3-a2 and nterm
(third is – secondtheterm),
commonor ratio and n is the
the number of= terms
a4-a3 to find.
(fourth term – thirdnumber
term), orof terms to find.
= an-an-1 and
4, 6, 8, 10, … 4, 8, 16, 32, …
a0 = a1- d (first term – common difference)
+2 +2 +2 d x 2 x2 x2 r

ADD to get the next term. MULTIPLY to get the next term
term.
