Chromosomal Theory of Inheritance

The chromosomal theory of inheritance

was given by Boveri and Sutton in the early
1900s. It is the fundamental theory of
genetics. According to this
theory, genes are the units of heredity and
are found in the chromosomes.

Chromosome
+ Chromosome is a structure found inside
the nucleus of a cell.
+ A chromosome is made up of proteins
and DNA organized into genes. Each cell
normally contains 23 pairs of
chromosomes.

12
+ In humans, a body cell contains 46
chromosomes.
+ Every chromosome consists of two
chromatids joined together at the
centromere.
+ Each chromatid is made up of a very long
DNA.
+ Each DNA consists of several genes.

13
DNA
+ DNA is the blueprint of heredity.
+ It has the code of instructions for the
expression of inherited characters.
+ It keeps a record of clues about our
genetic history.

14
DNA
+ It provides the molecular basis of heredity,
as life continues from one generation to the
next.
+ The genetic code, therefore, is stored in
short portions of DNA called genes.

15
Genes
+ Genes form the basis of expression of
inherited characters, both in structure and
function. The kind of gene products our cells
manufacture tells us what parts our bodies
should be made of and what our body parts
can do.

16
Genes
+ Since genes are inherited, it is not
surprising that parents and offspring
resemble each other in many ways, both in
form and function.

+ Draw a Punnett square which
shows the inheritance of the sex
chromosome. Represent the
female sex chromosome with XX
and the male sex chromosome
with XY.
XX x XY

Guide Questions
1. What will be the sex of a child when an egg is fertilized by a
sperm that has a Y chromosome?
2. What sperm must fertilize an egg to result in a female
child?
3. Based on this Punnett square, what percent of children
would you expect to be male?
4. Which sex chromosome is present in both male and
female?
5. Infer which sex chromosomes determine a person’s sex.

29
Color-blindness is a recessive, sex-linked
disorder in humans. A color-blind man has
a child with a woman who is a carrier of the
disorder. Illustrate using a Punnett square
the probability of having children who will
have a normal vision and a child who will be
color-blind.
KEY: X = normal vision, Xc = color-blindness

Guide Question
1. What is the genotype of the male?
2. What is the genotype of the female?
3. What is the chance that the child if color blind?
4. What is the chance that a daughter will be color
blind?
5. What is the chance that a son will be color blind?

Identify the terms being referred to.
1. Male sex chromosomes
a. Sex-linked traits
2. Female sex b. XX
chromosomes c. Sex-influenced traits
d. XY
3. These are inherited e. Sex-limited traits
through the X chromosome

32
Identify the terms being referred to.
4. Occur when phenotypes are
different between males and a. Sex-linked traits
females with the same genotype b. XX
c. Sex-influenced traits
5. Traits that can only be expressed d. XY
in one sex or the other. The traits e. Sex-limited traits
are not found on the X and Y
chromosomes, meaning they are
generally autosomal.
