BUSINESS ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS

CAPSTONE PROJECT

Capstone Project Mentor Role

What is the FBLA Capstone Project?
The Capstone Award is the highest individual achievement award an FBLA member can earn. To
achieve this award, members are tasked with identifying a real-world problem and then designing
and implementing a solution to that problem. This award provides students the opportunity to put
what they’ve learned in the classroom into action through a comprehensive project that is
designed to take a minimum of 80 hours.

Why Mentor?
Serving as a FBLA Capstone Project mentor provides you with the opportunity to not only make a
difference in a student’ life, but also support an effort to create lasting change in your community.

What is the Role of a Mentor?

Mentors play a variety of roles throughout the experience. Mentors will:
• Guide - Mentors sometimes put on a teacher hat as they guide students through decision
making and advise them in difficult scenarios.
• Advise – Mentors help advise students by directing students towards resources, tools, and
partners that might be able to help them through the process.
• Support – Mentors serve as sounding boards to support students as they think through
difficult problems.
• Coach – Mentors sometimes need to provide motivation to keep students moving forward.

Who Can Mentor?

The ideal mentor has relevant experience in the field of the student’s project area and/or specific
knowledge of the group being impacted by the student’s proposed problem.

Mentor Requirements:
• At least 25 years old
• Not a relative
• Not an employer

Mentor Expectations
Mentors are expected to check-in with students at least four times during the Capstone
experience. At the end of the project, mentors must complete an evaluation of the student’s
performance in terms of their impact made and personal growth.
