Module 4 Assignment 1

Using both printed and electronics media, research on the current relationship between
China and the Philippines. Consider the economic, political, and social factors. Discuss the
impact of Chinese culture on contemporary Philippine society and compare it with the impact
of Chinese culture on 19th century Philippines.

The current state of economic, trade, and political ties between the Philippines and the
People's Republic of China is the subject of this article, which is a very complicated but critical
regional problem in ASEAN. The election of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte in 2016 altered
the relationship's policy and outcomes. When Duterte's predecessor, President Aquino, was in
charge, the Huffington Post characterized this relationship as the most toxic in Asia. President

However, Duterte's stance on the South China Sea/West Philippine Sea maritime
disputes, where he recently declared that the Philippines cannot prevent China from building
military and government facilities on the disputed shoals, has piqued international economic
interest and criticism. Despite the fact that the Hague-based International Arbitration Tribunal
ruled in 2015 that China would respect the internationally agreed Philippine Maritime Territory.

government bases.

region, it should be noted that there are still many difficult and wide social and related issues to
be addressed. The Philippine-China relationship remains precarious, owing primarily to
unresolved maritime conflicts, which would, of course, have an effect on the Philippines'
economy and trade. The new President and his government have a strong and respectable

of economic advisors on their side, and the Philippines economy is undeniably improving from
its previous state. Its trade ties with China are still vital, and despite the issues listed above, I
believe they will continue to strengthen, hopefully to both countries' benefit.
