The relevance of this lesson to us is it is essential to not just study but also
appreciate Rizal, his writings and contribution, including his books which may teach us
how life is before our independence. Owing the fact that the contribution he gave to the
country is priceless. Jose Rizal’s love for the country led him to his execution. It was
such a heroic act of sacrificing his own life for an accusation and being a role model in
the rebellion of the Filipinos. Studying Rizal may prove us and give us a different view of
him as we study and dig in to his life, aside from this, studying his works may also lead
us to a better perception of life. Rizal also inspires us to be a major contributor that can
help our land succeed, just like his objectives and aims we also need to fight for our
freedom, fight for our justice and fight for our rights to achieve the triumph of all the
people who are regardless and to cultivate the weapon of writing novel neither. We do
not just live in a rebellion full of violent munitions and sharp weapons, we live in a world
that writing is an essential tool to conquer and fight for what is right.

The roots of the birth of nationalism however goes even before the Cavite
Mutiny and the execution of the three priests. It begins with the formation of the middle
class in the late 18th century and the 19th century as the Philippines was opened to
trade. Families who were mainly entrepreneurs became affluent as a result of
intensification of trade. They sent their children to colleges and universities in Manila
and even abroad. These educated people became priests, lawyers and educators

them of eventually aspiring for separatism.
