Specific Growth Rate

▪ Specific growth rate period is defined as the rate of increase of biomass

of a cell population per unit of biomass concentration.
▪ It occurs between lag and stationary phases

14
Substrate Utilization Rate

▪ microbial cells use nutrients for growth,

energy production & product
formation:
▪ Nutrients + microbial cells = cell
growth + energy + reaction products
▪ container initially contains a known
growth substrate concentration S.
▪ container is well mixed & O2 does not
become a limiting factor for microbial
growth.
▪ Initially a known conc. X of viable
microbial cells (i.e. inoculum) is added
to container & with time, growth
substrate S is utilized for cell growth
▪ over time: a decrease in S (negative
dS/dt) and increase in X (positive
15
dX/dt)
▪ What are different bacterial measurement/quantification
methods?
▪ How can you measure cell biomass?
▪ What is CFU/ml?
▪ Why are bacteria quantified in colonies?
▪ Why is generation time different for different bacteria?
