August has nally surprised us all.
is means heading back to our
college towns and away from our
hometowns. Although I will miss
Mommas home cooked meals and
my Pops blasting his oldies in his
pick-up truck, Im glad to get back
in the swing of things with school.
(And by swing of things, I mean
tailgates, all-nighters, and
power hours.)
Summer is always a bittersweet
feeling. e ingredients for my sweet summer has been
Tequila (dont act like youre surprised), nights of debauchery,
oating the river, soccer, work, and trying to learn how to
swim. (Yes, thats right, I dont know how to swim.)
Before leaving last semester, I asked you all to do something
out of your comfort zone and to send me your adventures.
Now that summer is about to wrap up, please send me in
your experiences. Id love to hear how crazy college students
are... out of school.
Freshman, welcome to college! Your life will be completely
dierent. As you start to pack your car to move out of your
parents home and now to live on your own, be prepared.
It isnt like high school anymore. You will need to study,
you will live o of ramen, and you will need to stock up on
energy drinks because before you know it, its nals time.
Scared about starting the next chapter of your life? Tweet
me. Ill help you out.
So Long Sweet Summer

Ngoc, What do you do
when you have frst-day-of-
school jitters?
- Christy Wayne, San Marcos
is may sound so nerdy, but I
try to go to sleep as early as I can.
I always have the fear of missing
my rst class. I think itll just
start my new school year badly.
I also set myself a list of goals
that I want to accomplish in the
upcoming three months. First
day of school = fresh goals and
ambitions. - Ngoc
Katie, I am going through a
rough break-up, how do I get
over this?
Alexis Winters, Savannah
Break-ups are never going to
be easy, but in my experience, to
completely get over that person
you need to cut them out of your
life. Even if remaining friends was
high on your priorities it will keep
you from moving on. Delete him
from Facebook is a must, no need
to have his new life without you
rubbed in your face every time you
get online. If need be, tell him that
you cant handle a friendship right
now, but maybe later on when
youre over it. Just cut him out!
- Katie
Jasmine, what has been your all
time favorite interview and why?
-Missy Weaver, Austin
Among the many badass
celebrities and students Ive been
able to meet, I would say my
favorite interview would be a close
tie between country artist Kevin
Fowler, and G.O.O.D Music
rapper Big Sean. Kevin Fowler
and I laughed the whole interview,
where his smartass comebacks
matched my sassy attitude. Big
Seans interview was one to
remember because he did use the
word dick in the same sentence as
mom and grandma.
- Jasmine
Ryan, whats your best
memory of summer vacation?
- Austin Wilson, Houston
Not that I dont ll my summers
with non-stop mayhem and
fun every year. But the summer
of 2007 was one of the best.
Some buddies and I drove to
Southern California and spent
three glorious weeks on the
beach without a care in the
world. I highly recommend
beach roadtrips to anyone and
everyone.- Ryan

Destructo - a line-up that will ensure a night of digital,
danceable beats. Dont expect guitar arsenals or jam bands,
at Hard Summer Festival laptops are more likely to take
the lead. Although each of the acts are based in developed
bass lines and electronic trills, they represent a different
facet of electronica. Headlining is German dance-punk duo

SPOTLIGHT
Te Longhorn baseball
team made it to Omaha,
but barely had their suit-
cases unpacked before
having to head back to
Austin. Te Longhorns
faced a powerful Florida
squad in the frst game,
with Taylor Jungmann
looking sharp to begin the
game. But by the middle
innings, Jungmann strug-
gled with control and the
Gators eventually started
tearing the cover of the
ball. In the second, loser-
go-home game, the Horns
ofense couldnt get going
against the University of
North Carolinas Tarheels.
Te Longhorns shouldnt
feel too terrible about this
season, though. Many of
their young players look
like stars in the making,
and Coach Garrido will
have this team ready for a
stellar 2012 season.
DISAPPOINTMENT IN OMAHA
MONSTER MIKE
The Longhorn football squad should
have a deep corps of wide receiv-
ers for Garrett Gilbert (or, insert QB
name here) to throw to. The one
thats been dubbed one of the best
athletes on the team is Mike Davis,
and hell have an opportunity to
shine come September. He had a
breakout game against Wyoming
last year, and should burn them
again come September 11th here in
Austin.

HOME COOKIN The Longhorn football team
wont have to leave the state in their frst two
games of the 2011 season, as they face the Rice
Owls in Houston and Wyoming Cowboys here in
Austin. Rice and Wyoming combined for 7 wins
in 2010, so heres hoping the Longhorns start the
season 2-0.

SIXTH STREET
MUSICIAN HOT
Never too young to shred
You probably havent heard of
guitar virtuoso Yayo Sanchez,
but you certainly know of the
people hes shared the stage
with. Although the Austin na-
tive just turned eighteen, Ozzy
Osbourne knows his name and
hes already performed with the
likes of Slash. Yayo, who played
his rst paid gig at twelve, was
sent to Rock and Roll Fantasy
Camp where he got to hone his
craft with legendary musicians,
including Bruce Kulick, guitarist
for Yayos favorite band, Kiss. To
me, they werent even human,
they were superheroes, he says
of the costumed rockers. ey
were like my Captain America
and Hulk. Not only did Yayo
get to meet and play
with one of his idols, but Kulick
was so impressed with the young-
ster that he told him hed help
him record his demo. I couldnt
write music but I learned really
quickly, he says of the once in a
lifetime opportunity.
Ozzys choice
Yayo ew out to LA at the age
of 14 and recorded a four track
demo with Kulick and ex-eo-
ry Of A Dead Man and Slashs
drummer, Dave Fitz. Pretty
soon his demo made it onto the
doorstep of the Osbourne man-
sion. Ozzy was looking for gui-
tar players, says Yayo. I learned
all his songs note for note and
was Skyping with all of them,
[Sharon included,] all the
time. Even though Ozzy loved
him, Sharon
ultimately
nixed the
union. Its a
little inap-
propriate for
a 16 year old
boy to be go-
ing out on the road with a 60
year old man, she told him. It
was at that point that he decid-
ed that he wasnt going to play
in anyones shadow. When Im
playing Wembley or Madison
Square Garden, Id rather those
hundreds of thousands of peo-
ple be there to see me!
Since then, Yayos taken the last
couple of years to ne-tune his
sound and form his dream band,
YAYO. When I was younger,
people were like, look at that
cute little kid with the guitar
but now Im at the point where
people get into my music be-
cause its good, not cute!

MORE THAN A HOBBY, ITS LIFE
18 | AUGUST 2011 | STUDYBREAKS.COM
How did you get
involved with music?
In middle school I started writing
a lot of poetry because it helped me
vent.I bottled a lot of my emotions
up inside, and didnt know how to
express myself. One of my close
cousins started producing beats,
and I was at his house one day, and
really liked his sound. He told me
to spit a poem I had written about
my father, and so it began. Ive
been rapping since I was about
14-years old. Its become more
than just a hobby, its a passion,
and now its life.
Who are you
most inuenced by?
It started with the lyrics of Nas
and Eminem. It then moved on to
the music business aspect of Jay-
Z,the popularity of Lil Wayne and
Drake, and the unique styles of
Big Sean and Kid Cudi.

words: jasmine vallejo photos: mattie c. steger
Just because you stayed up all
night doesnt mean you should
dress like it! Etiquette clothing design
brings back old-school chic.
Q: Why the vintage look?
I have always been in love with fashion and
clothing styles from the years 1930-1960. People
took pride in dressing and the hairstyles for women
were amazing! Men would wear suits to go watch
summer baseball games, what an amazing and
romantic time.
Q: How did Etiquette get started?
It was never my intention to start a clothing line,
it all happened by accident. e demand for a
sweater like mine was so great that I really just
fell into it.I enjoy the thrill of nding old vintage
sweaters, it is like a treasure hunt. Every sweater
has a story to tell.
Q: What inspired you form
the students on campus?
I noticed a very relaxed dress code and it kind of
bothered me. I would see people in pajamas and
oversized clothing. Every morning I get up and
iron my clothing and dress like I am going to work
because that is how I see school.
Q: Whats a fashion dont?
Everyone has their own style but just remember to
have respect for yourself and the people around you.
1. Dress as if you are going to meet someone
important or might see someone you like.
2. Taking the time to dress up shows that you
have respect for yourself and for others.
3. Take the time to iron your clothing.
4 .Mix the old with the new.
5. Have fun with the way your dress
6. Dressing nicely does not mean spending
large amounts of money. Some of my
favorite things were found at second hand
stores.
Lastly, the best thing to wear is a smile!
It is the best accessory that anyone can
sport-- It shows condence and that
you are approachable.
It is like a treasure
hunt. Every sweater
has a story to tell.

1 DO NOT CARRY
A SCHOOL MAP
Most schools have an app you
can download on your smart
phone. Not only can you view
when and where your schools
football games are, but it can
also tell you where each build-
ing is. Whether youre across
campus trying to fnd your next
class or even a place to grub,
leave the paper maps that were
given at orientation, at home.
3DO NOT MODEL
STRUT TO CLASS
Since it is the frst month of the
semester, parties are happening
around campus day and night.
We promise you, the majority
of us went out and had a few
(okay, a little more than a few)
with the intention of possibly
not waking up in the morning
for that 8am. Even if we did
hear our alarm, we rolled out
of bed and put the frst thing
we saw on. If youre heading
to class with your hair did, nails
did, and heels, youll stick out
like a sore thumb.
4LEAVE YOUR
HIGH SCHOOL
TITLES AT HOME
Hey there Mr. Prom King, were
talking to you. Not only did the
people you graduated with al-
ready forgot who won, but the
students here in college dont
give a damn. You got a sash,
a funky crown, and a dance.
Its okay to be proud and have
the sash hanging in your room,
just dont bring it to the dorm.
Same goes goes for you Prom
Queens. Dont bring the cheap
crown to college- it wont im-
press anyone.
2LEAVE YOUR
HIGH SCHOOL
LETTERMAN
AT HOME
Sure, it took you four years to
fnally earn those patches you
worked so hard for, but leave
that jacket back at home. Even
if you did get a full ride schol-
arship to college for your sport,
doesnt mean you can bring it
along. Nothing screams, I just
graduated high school and
proud! more than sporting that
bulky, two color out-of-style
jacket. Give it to your momma,
shell always be proud.

Dorms are small!

Chores are

What is one item in your room
that best describes you?
KD: My wall! Its colorful and
nostalgic. I love that I can just
look up and see so many of my
favorite memories tacked up.
MT: My bed. Even though its
not the softest or comest bed
out there, its warm and always
welcomes me with open arms...
something that Id say that I do.
What is one thing you
wouldnt live without in
your room?
KD: My bed. Its kind of sad,
but I could literally lie in bed
all day because its so com-
fortable. Memory foam pads
work wonders.
MT: My micro eece blanket
because its the perfect size,
useful, and portable to bring with
me to the library or anywhere
that I study.
What was your inspiration
for decorating your room?
KD: Its just a culmination of
pictures and trinkets I like and/
or hold dear to me. I want the
room to feel like home. ats
my inspiration.
MT: I wanted a place that would
feel homier and not like the
typical cold, white, dorm room.
Katrinas mom said it looks lived
in... I dont know if thats a good
thing or not, but I call it home!
What are the essential items
you need in a dorm room?
KD: Memory foam, fridge, alarm
clock that actually wakes you up,
something to blast music, and an
awesome roommate (not an item,
but essential).
MT: A super loud alarm clock
because youll slowly not be
able to hear it due to many all-
nighters, great speakers to jam
good music, pictures to make
you feel at home, owers, a lot
of decorations, and last but not
least, a great roommate to share
all of this with.
Its easy for dorm rooms to look dull. The prison-looking white walls
and rock-hard beds make being away from home harder, especially
for incoming freshmen. Katrina and Michelle didnt let the outdated
and bare feel of Jester dorms stop them from making a home away
from home. It only takes a touch of color, comfy bedding, and plenty
of documented memories to make your dorm room go from drab to
fab. Note: An awesome roommate is key.

Dirty Martins has been UT
staple since 1926 serving col-

all the basics burgers, onion

Greasy and packed with favor,

WHAT YOU NEED TO MAKE SURE
YOU BRING THIS SEMESTER
Studies have shown a relationship between binge drinking and
excessive dieting among college women who dieted at an early age.
In May of 2009, Fairfield College in New Zealand had their lawn
decorated with two 40 foot penises.
In an effort to reduce the AIDS epidemic in Uganda, MP Sulaiman
Madada offered to give girls scholarships for college who were
virgins when they graduated from high school.
Akrit Jaswal is a 17-year-old who is currently working on his
masters degree. Hes performed surgery in India since
the age of seven.
Aries Your A-Game... in beer pong, that
is. You left last semester never winning a
game, how sad. Now, your friends should be
referring to you as Champ.
Taurus Condoms... remember last year
how often your roommate asked for one?
Double up this year. You decided to sign
another lease with him.
Gemini Daddys Credit Card... who else
is going to support your alcohol habits
every weekend?
Cancer Sperrys... like youd forget these
anyway. You practically wore them every day
for the last two semesters.
Leo Stunna Shades... if you want to hide
your glazed and blazed eyes, or if the sun is
too bright for the walk of shame, make sure
these are always near.
Virgo MCAT books... your parents still have
high hopes that you are attending medical
school, however youve never opened a book.
Take them back to college, or your parents
will fnd out.
Libra Shot Glasses... one tequila, two tequila,
three tequila, foor. You know the drill, pre-
gaming before going out is only successful if
youve taken many shots.
Scorpio Playboy Magazines... we all get a
little lonely at times. Some, more often than
others. Make sure you clean up your mess!
Sagittarius PB&J... bye-bye convenient
dorm food. Youre on your own and you have
to survive somehow. PB&J will have to do until
you fgure all the ropes in the kitchen.
Capricorn Chapstick... whats crackin? YO
LIPS. No girl will come within a mile of you with
lips like that.
Aquarius Swag... NERD swag that is. Believe
it or not, girls fnd guys extremely attractive
when they are driven and going somewhere. If
you lack it, fake it til you make it.
Pisces Killer heels... essentials for a night
on the town. Invest in some fuck-me-pumps.
Guys love it when you show some leg.

Did you know that the

would be 76-years old. Celebrate

This month in history
Fifty years ago this month a little
boy, was (allegedly, according to
some) born in a Hawaiian hospital.
That little boy, Barack Hussein
Obama, would grow up to be the
44th president of the United States. Celebrate the
presidents Aug. 4 birthday by either toasting his
impending re-election or planning his defeat.
Entertainment break
Conan the Barbarian will hit theaters country-
wide Aug. 19. Jason Momoa, known mostly for
TV roles on Stargate and Game of Thrones is
Conan, previously played by the currently single
Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Quick facts
The original Conan movie grossed
nearly $40 million in the U.S.
Conan was Arnolds frst big-time movie.
Previously he had done bit roles in made-for-
TV movies or comedies. Next up for him was a
Conan sequel and then The Terminator.
Random reason to celebrate
Did you know that the incomparable rock star
Elvis Presley died this month? This is the 34th
anniversary of his death. He would have been
76-years old. The exact circumstances of his death
are hazy but two main theories include drug
overdose and constipation. Celebrate the Kings
death this Aug. 16 with his trademark fried peanut
butter and banana sandwich.
