Reading Blog: Morril & Uchia

This week’s reading blog, we were provided with two different readings; Morril -
Developing a Personal System of Values, and Uchia - What Students Must Know To Succeed in
the 21 Century. The first reading by Morril discussed a lot about values, as that was its primary
focus. In the reading, the author goes into lots of detail about the meaning of values, I can agree
with the author when he states “-values refer more properly to those things most important to a
person,” (Morril, p. 168). Moving down further into the reading, something I found interesting is
how the author included intrinsic and instrumental values. Overall with this first reading I found
it very interesting to read the different values and how in college your own personal and
intellectual values are different. In the next reading written by Uchia - What Students Must
Know To Succeed in the 21st Century, the author discusses about 10 different tips or advice that
can help you succeed as a college student in the 21st century. Overall in the reading, I thought it
was very interesting that there were 10 different types of information or advice to help you
succeed like; 1.Use of math, logic, and reasoning skills; functional and operational literacy; and
an understanding of statistics, 2. Critical interpersonal skills, including speaking, listening, and
the ability to be part of a team, and many other tools or pieces of advice. Overall, I liked both
provided readings, but I like the first reading Morril - Developing a Personal System of Values
because I feel like the information discussed in the reading I can agree more to.
