RECAP

Since the beginning of the printing press revolution in 1436, people’s

reading habits have greatly changed. As we now live in the Information Age,
allocating a longer time for reading becomes difficult. How do we keep up
with this information overload?

In everyday life, we have to read many texts ranging from books,

newspapers, pamphlets, journals to e-mails. Many times it is impossible to
read the whole text due to various reasons. Most of the time, of course, the
reason is a shortage of time. What other reasons do you have very often?

Such situations certain techniques come to help. Certain reading

skills are employed by readers to get the desired information from the text.
These skills include skimming.

LESSON

 When we read quickly without pausing to study the details, it is called

skim reading or skimming. (Konar, 2009: p.154)
 Skimming is reading the text quickly in order to assess its nature and
content. (Kumar, 2009: p.1)
 When we skim an article, we quickly look over it to identify the main
ideas and some of the details. (Rief and Heimburge, 2007: p.72)
 While skimming, “you pick out only keywords in every sentence”.(Kui,
2008: p.200)
 Skimming is a pre-reading technique and should be done very fast; if
it takes more than a few minutes you’re not skimming, you’re reading.
(Glasman-Deal, 2010: p.13)

To skim, prepare yourself to move rapidly through the pages.

You will not read every word; you will pay special attention to
typographical cues-headings, boldface and italic type, indenting,
bulleted, and numbered lists. You will be alert for keywords and
phrases, the names of people and places, dates, nouns, and
unfamiliar words. In general, follow these steps:

1) Read the table of contents or chapter overview to learn the main

divisions of ideas.
2) Glance through the main headings in each chapter just to see a
word or two. Read the headings of charts and tables.
3) Read the entire introductory paragraph and then the first and
last sentence only of each following paragraph. For each
paragraph, read only the first few words of each sentence or to
locate the main idea.
4) Stop and quickly read the sentences containing
keywords indicated in boldface or italics.
5) When you think you have found something significant, stop to
read the entire sentence to make sure. Then go on the same
way. Resist the temptation to stop to read details you don't
need.
6) Read chapter summaries when provided.

WRAP-UP

To wrap everything up that we have talked about in this lesson, let us

always remember that:

To skim well, you have to push your eyes along so that it takes in
large blocks of words. In general, ignore everything but the nouns and verbs.
Skimming is no different from speed reading, except that skimming is a
searching-out operation. Its three components are: rapid reading; un-
wandering attention; and keeping in mind what you’re looking for
(Kesselman-Turkel, 2003: p.42-43)
VALUING

We all share the benefits of a healthy and safe workplace so always be

mindful about the safety of yourself and the people around you.

POSTTEST

Directions: Give yourself 60 seconds to skim through the paragraph below.

When you are finished, proceed to answer the given questions.

Size Matters

Here’s something to think about the next time you go shopping. Have you
ever noticed how many trolleys are available when you go to the supermarket? In my
experience, it seems like hundreds! But how about the number of hand baskets?
Invariably, I struggle to find even one, especially when I only need a few items. Why
might this be the case? Well it seems to be a tactic used to encourage us to buy more.
If you are walking around with an empty trolley, you are more tempted to fill it, so if
you a planning on only doing a quick shop, always try to find a basket. It will be
lighter, easier to use and is sure to save you money!
